I’ve gotten several e-mails asking me about the low-carb bars made by the Atkins company. They are certainly a much better option than the low-fat diet that is still recommended by the mainstream nutrition organizations, which is notoriously ineffective (4, 5). These products usually contain a significant amount of carbohydrate, but a large part of these carbs are indigestible. May 15, 2012 by Barry Lutz TweetI really like the idea of being able to include raw protein bars as part of my natural nutritional health diet, sometimes as a balanced meal replacement, and especially to increase my protein intake with working out and lifting weights.
But up until recently, I really couldn’t do this, because I just was not satisfied with the nutrition content of the bars – or that the raw protein bars were also what I would think of as a balanced food bar. The best bars that I could fine that I was satisfied were all natural ingredients, had little protein compared to the amount of carbohydrates. And it seemed like the bars that contained the most protein were more like candy bars, or some processed food product – I want balanced nutrition, not a sugar high. They are a great source of protein after working out that can be eaten on the way home from the gym for immediate absorption, or when I don’t feel like making a protein smoothie. They can give me some additional protein later at night before going to bed – Dale’s has a raw protein bar that has less than half of the carbs that are in their other bars  that is excellent for this. I have mentioned just how nutritionally balanced these are as raw food bars, and you can expect  a combination of the following, depending on the specific bar:  240-280 calories, 22g protein, 12-28g carbs (7-9g fiber), and 12-16g fat.
The carbohydrates include not added sugar, sugar alcohols, or artificial sweeteners – only natural sugars from fruit, or low glycemic raw organic sweeteners like coconut nectar. The use of coconut nectar, coconut flour, and coconut oil as major ingredients in these raw protein bars was one of the big draws for me.  I really like the nutritional health benefits from coconut oil and use all of these for myself, including coconut water that I drink all the time and use for blending smoothies. You will also find out about just how committed Dale’s is to making the most nutritious raw protein-raw food bars available, by making their own organic date paste, and nut butters.

I really like these raw protein bars, along with their raw protein powder.  I know that these proteins are all plant based, and no I am not using them because I am a vegetarian or vegan.
I started with the protein bars because they were just what I wanted for a balanced nutrient based food bar.

That’s why I was so excited to learn about Quest Nutrition products a few months ago from some of my fitness friends.
For example, the Chocolate Brownie Quest Bar contains 20g of protein and 24g of carbs, but 19g of the carbs are from dietary fiber so there are technically only 5g of active carbs.
