I’m happy to report I completed the 30 days with not one ounce of sugar, grains or dairy.
I do plan on continuing to eat clean most of the time, but I’m definitely not going to be as strict. During the whole 30 I also slept better, slayed the sugar dragon (after week 1), and had more energy throughout the day. Here is the whole 30 shopping list I used from the whole 30 website. They also have lots of other downloads to help get you started.
One of the first things I would do after heading to the store was wash all my fruit and vegetables and then cut them up for the week.
For the sweet potato hash, all I did was cook chopped bell peppers, a handful of spinach and shredded sweet potatoes in avocado oil for a few minutes. One of my favorite dinners was this Mexican chicken soup that I posted about a few weeks ago. I tried the Whole 30 for about two weeks, because I had digestive issues and everyone swore it would make me feel great. Of the four veggies I tried, the only one I could see realistically being regrown in your house and actually getting any use of it is scallions. The first time I did it, I didn’t introduce foods once at a time, so I was never able to know for sure what kinds of things were affecting me negatively.
Regrowing vegetables refers to basically inserting the cut root ends of produce into plain old water and waiting for them to grow. I cut off the usable leafy part for my stir-fry and stuck the bottom (root) into a container of water instead of throwing it away.
You can tell that the bok choy and the scallions (the two left) significantly taller than before.
They grew significantly more than the others, and didn’t get as rotten on the bottoms as the rest.
I was determined to complete the challenge and was so happy my husband and friend came along for the ride.

The second time, I figured out that gluten and sugar would have to be very rare indulgences, but I could handle grass-fed dairy.
These nutrients can’t be provided from water alone, so how is that growing supposed to happen.
The lettuce and cabbage (the two right) are pretty much the same size as the one week picture, but looking a little worse for wear. Yes we did end up eating them all and this is officially the most liked photo on my instagram account. So one day would be sweet potato hash, the next would be scrambled eggs with a banana (sprinkled with cinnamon) and almond butter. It helps to grill a lot of chicken at the beginning of the week, so you can have it in your salads. Also my husband needs to lose 20 pounds and he has worked on the same 20 off and on for 2 yrs.

I don’t think I could ever do this and still feed the rest of my family (5 kids) so good for you! Even with regular water changes, all the plants had started getting pretty slimy looking and brown where they were sitting in the water. Due to the rotting factor, I think you’d be able to regrow a scallion once, and that would be it. I still had salad dressings that had sugar in them, yogurt and other things I never realized had added sugar.
I probably only had 3 smoothies on the whole 30, because they really don’t encourage them. Now that I know whole grains and a little bit of dairy doesn’t give me issues, I will be adding those back in regularly because they are still healthy. Think of it as pre-pressure cooked!And at harvest time, have an antipasto or canning party – share in the washing, chopping, and preparation of making delicious home-made canned foods such as pickles, stewed tomatoes, antipasto, canned fruits, jams and jellies. My husband and I meal plan dinners for the week and I make enough for a family of 6 each night (2 servings for him, 1 for me, 2 lunch servings for him, 1 lunch for me!). We meal plan dinners too, and we often have leftovers, but we use them on leftover night for dinner or for lunch if we’re not interested in any of the food prep stuff.
