As children file into the halls of Oradell Public School (OPS) this September, they will be greeted with new faces, as the district welcome several new members to its administrative team. Principal Scott Ryan retired this month, and Assistant Principal John Norton is taking a position with another school district.
In their places, Anne Facendo will serve as both the district's new superintendent and principal of OPS. Facendo has 25 years of experience in general education, special education and bilingual education, working as a classroom teacher for 16 years and a literacy coach for two years in the public schools of Red Bank. She previously served as an elementary school principal and as a middle school principal in Middletown. Facendo earned her undergraduate degree in elementary education from Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, and her master's in elementary education at Mary Grove College in Detroit. She is currently attending Kean University working toward a doctorate in educational leadership. Facendo will be replacing Interim Superintendent Jeffrey Feifer, who filled that position since March, when Maria Nuccetelli stepped down after two years in the role. In a letter to Oradell parents, Facendo expressed her gratitude for the opportunity and said she looked forward to the start of the new school year. Bozios spent 15 years at Orchard School in Ridgewood before stepping into the position of assistant principal at OPS.
She has a bachelor's degree from Bucknell University, a master's in curriculum and teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University and a master's educational leadership from the College of Saint Elizabeth.
She holds undergraduate degrees from Rutgers and Kean universities, a master's in curriculum and instruction from Kean, a master's in literacy specialist from Teachers College and is currently finishing her master's in educational administration from Rutgers.
Kevin Stokes, who has spent the past seven years teaching fifth and sixth grade at OPS, will supervise fourth through sixth grade. In his time with the district, he has served as the lunchroom supervisor, NJASK prep instructor and workshop facilitator, geography bee coordinator, Star Lab educator and safety patrol leader.
Stokes earned his undergraduate degree in communications from Ramapo College, a master's degree in elementary mathematics from Nova University and is working to complete his master's in educational leadership from Ramapo College in May 2013.
Stokes has coached basketball at Ramapo High School and has volunteered with Oradell Junior Basketball. In addition to a new superintendent, principal and assistant principal, the district will welcome Alfredo Aguilar as its new business administrator, replacing Rita Cioppi, who retired after five years with the district. He earned a bachelor's degree from Seton Hall University, a master's from Touro College, and a doctorate from Nova Southeastern University. As business administrator, Aguilar will manage the district's finances, its budget, payroll and buildings and grounds maintenance.
The town itself is friendly, too, says Kessler's daughter, Barbara Tobin, who helps in the shop. Other borough parks include Memorial Field, with numerous sports fields, basketball and tennis courts, two lighted skating ponds, playground equipment and a picnic area. In the center of town, a small park memorializes the onetime Oradell resident and astronaut Wally Schirra, "the first Jerseyman to orbit the earth," according to a bronze plaque. Last year, more than $24,000 in federal recreation funds were allotted to Van Buskirk Island Park, on a man-made island at the south end of the Oradell Reservoir. Formed in 1802 by mill dams along the Hackensack River, the island is the site of the Hackensack Water Works, established in 1906, a few years after the reservoir was formed.
After years of wrangling over whether to allow supermarkets, restaurants or condos to take over Van Buskirk Island, the 13-acre property was designated a public park and wildlife preserve.
On one September afternoon, a couple pulled up alongside the reservoir and leaped out to train their binoculars on a bald eagle banking over the water.

Oradell is also the home of the Bergen County Players, a community theater now in its 80th year.
A congratulatory letter mounted at the entrance to the performance hall is signed by John Travolta, whose mother was a founding member of the company. There are many historic buildings in Oradell, including Federal-style homes dating from the early 1800s. Alongside the railroad tracks are Victorian homes, some large and elegant, others small and quaint. With 37 listings currently on the market in Oradell, prices start at $195,000 for a one-bedroom condo. In 1994, in response to the demand for affordable housing in Bergen County, New Jersey, Habitat for Humanity of Bergen County was born. In 2006, in response to the tragedy in the south, Habitat Bergen built four homes locally to ship to the south, and again, our volunteers traveled; this time to Lafayette, Louisiana and completed the construction of one of the four homes we have contributed for those affected by Hurricane Katrina and Rita. Working in partnership with another not-for-profit in 2011, we renovated an existing building in Garfield, New Jersey. Additionally, Habitat Bergen launched a multi-phase response to help families in Little Ferry and surrounding areas impacted by Superstorm Sandy in January 2013.
Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat Bergen builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families. Funny, as an old architecture buff, some of the nicest homes I've seen have been in places such as Newark and Trenton - from when those towns really were the centers of wealth in the State.
I like old historics, so I would have to say Oradell, Hackensack, Old Tappan, Montclair and of course #1 Ridgewood! Ryan will be honored at the September Board of Education meeting for his 21 years of service to the district.
Megan Bozios, a former teacher in the Ridgewood school district, has been hired as assistant principal. In addition, she worked as district director of curriculum for the humanities and as supervisor of high school humanities in the Middletown school system. She is certified as an elementary school teacher, teacher of the handicapped, supervisor, principal and school administrator. As an experienced administrator with almost 25 years served in the field of public education in New Jersey, I knew immediately that Oradell was a very special community with much to offer the bright young students who live here," she wrote. She spent five years teaching grades one through three in the West-Windsor Plainsboro district, and served as a literacy coach for children in kindergarten through fifth grade at Riverside Elementary in Princeton last year. Aguilar previously served as the assistant business administrator for the Ridgewood Board of Education. Bergen County is known for its high quality of life standards, including it excellent education system.
Five years ago, a renovation spiffed up the large space in a historic Dutch colonial house that has been expanded more than once.
Lining Oradell's main commercial street, Kinderkamack Road, are numerous storefronts advertising activities for children and adults: ballet arts, tae kwon do, yoga, tai chi, ballroom dance, music lessons.
The sprawling brick complex was among the first to provide water using a treatment method that became the international standard, says the website of the conservancy that maintains the building as an educational facility.
It is on NJ Transit's Pascack Valley Line, which conveys commuters to Manhattan via Hoboken or Secaucus.
Small homes range up to about $400,000, with larger three-to-five-bedroom houses available up to $750,000.

Our mission is, of course, consistent with that of our parent organization: to provide decent, affordable homes for hard-working Bergen County families. We sponsored a home in Veracruz for a Jimmy Carter Work Project and volunteers from Bergen County took part by helping to build and to be a part of that important work. This response includes a range of services that address both the short-term and long-term need for safe and decent housing.
Habitat Bergen houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with affordable, no-interest loans.
We encourage lively, open debate on the issues of the day, and ask that you refrain from profanity, hate speech, personal comments and remarks that are off point. Trump doesn't build golf courses just anyplace and he used the property that once belonged to John De Lorean on Lamington Rd. But Summit Ave has some of the most beautiful homes in all of Bergen county, Spring valley is another part of Hackensack that has beautiful homes, and that goes into Maywood aswell..

A block away is a baseball diamond with a sign indicating that the field is equipped with a lightning detection system that will provoke sirens and strobe lights if a storm is approaching.
Farther from the center of town, there are developments of modest colonials and split levels, with an occasional custom home taking the place of a teardown.
We have partnered with corporations, community groups and churches to provide much needed renovation work to existing homes in Bergen County.
Habitat Bergen’s team of generous volunteers have already completed numerous homes and with a back log of additional homes requesting our assistance. The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments are recycled into a revolving fund that is used to build more houses. In addition, we have partnered with other not for profits to build food pantries and homes for homeless, teenage mothers. The project involves building two duplexes, creating four 3-bedroom homes that will be housing 4 families.
Each year we tithe a part of our fund-raised dollars to our sister affiliates in other parts of the world where dollars are a precious resource.
This project is unique for Habitat Bergen in that it will require special attention to design energy efficiency, water conservation, indoor environmental quality, etc. The opportunities that have been presented to our affiliate have given us pause to consider the desperate need of our neighbors in this otherwise, very wealthy county; and we are not alone in our concern or our work.
