Jerry finished High School, and earned a track scholarship to Ripon College in Ripon Wisconsin. She loved to be outdoors working in her flower and vegetable gardens and tending to her bird feeders.

John Hogan moved his family to Kenosha Wisconsin, part of the greater Chicago area in the 1920's where he opened his own small insurance company, John L Hogan Insurance. Joanne lived her life in Des Moines from birth until December, 2009, when at the age of 92 she moved to Auburn, CA to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren. Jerry's early years were spent on the streets of the Chicago of the 1920's, where gangsters and ward politicians ruled the Democratic neighborhoods.
Jerry witnessed the bombing of Berlin, Dresden, and the Battle of the Bulge, where his brother John was pinned down in the infantry. He even developed a correspondence with a German man who served on the other side of the war in WWII on the internet.
He graduated from Olds High School in 1962 and received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Goshen College. Over the years, she worked for the ISU Extension service, taught home economics and other subjects as a substitute teacher, and directed Montessori and Head Start preschool programs.
Jerry also recalled standing in line at a bank run when FDR closed the banks to stabilize them.
He was able to trace his ancestry on his mother's side for generations, and learned that the Beswicks traced to the Mayflower, a distinction largely lost on this Irish family. Our kitchen table was often the center of an afternoon cocktail while mothers waited to pick up children from the nearby school. He was the Executive Director of Iowa Protection and Advocacy Services and was instrumental in the creation of the American with Disabilities Act. Dorothy supported her children and grandchildren in all their activities and interests, faithfully attending concerts and sports events. A long series of family pets joined our family, and several more pets seemed to stay with us no matter who they belonged to, a tradition which continues to this day.

And the Irish tradition of sharing a drink with friends was always honored at the Hogan house. He enjoyed Bible study, music, woodworking, barbecuing, working in the yard, and especially spending time with family. Dorothy and Herbert lived in Coin, New Sharon, Missouri Valley, Oakland, Hawarden, Des Moines, New London and Marshalltown, serving United Methodist Church congregations in all those Iowa communities.
