Tourism Australia Managing Director John O'Sullivan responded to the Canadian Tourism Commission's call to brave the ice bucket challenge in Sydney in September to raise awareness and funds for Motor Neuron Disease (MND) – a serious degenerative nerve disease that claims two Australian lives every day.

Read about Stephanie’s experience volunteering at Tourism Australia in 2014 as part of the Student Volunteer program.
I first spotted the Student Volunteer program at Tourism Australia on their website after clicking around government websites looking for graduate jobs. Everyone I have met in the Sydney office has been warm and friendly, always happy to have a chat and share their experiences.

Tourism Australia’s Student Volunteer program formed the perfect complement to my studies - combining my university majors of tourism management and marketing - due to its role as Australia's tourism marketing authority responsible for marketing Australia overseas. My one-year internship extended across the Corporate Communications and Domestic Marketing Units, where I was provided exposure to what was happening across the rest of the organisation. I was tasked with responsibilities such as coordinating relevant tourism industry events and contributing to the creation and launch of the 'Best Jobs in the World' campaign. A highlight of my internship was participating in the finals week of 'Best Jobs', including climbing the Harbour Bridge alongside the finalists and being granted exclusive access to Taronga Zoo before the park was opened to the public. One year after my internship, I was reunited with Tourism Australia on a permanent basis, after being offered the full-time position of Project Coordinator within the Consumer Insights Unit.
I appreciated the efficiency of the recruitment process, and Tourism Australia's friendly People and Culture Unit were on stand-by to answer my queries throughout the process. In my role, I am responsible for assisting with campaign activity evaluation and consumer research to enhance the effectiveness of Tourism Australia's marketing activities. Participation in Tourism Australia's Student Volunteer program eased my transition into the workplace, particularly in terms of having previously been exposed to the organisation's systems and processes, and having developed positive working relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
My time at the organisation has strengthened my passion for destination marketing, helping me to refine my areas of interest with respect to my long-term career goals. This position is responsible for planning and implementing Tourism Australia’s global media strategy and providing advice and support in media buying.

We are acknowledged as one of the most innovative and successful tourism marketing organisations in the world.
Filmed against a backdrop of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour, a koala and kangaroo delivered the drenching to Mr O'Sullivan who, despite chilly temperatures in Sydney of no more than 18C, said it was a "great cause" and he was only too happy to lend his support. Twenty-one Sydney staff set their alarms for an early start and made their way out to Sydney Olympic Park to run, dance, laugh and get covered in colour.
Our student volunteer program gives Australian university students who are passionate about tourism and Australia the opportunity to undertake practical work experience in various business units of Tourism Australia’s Sydney office. I've always been interested in international relations and communicating across cultures, and I realised that Tourism Australia was a perfect fit with my professional interests and my background in Public Relations. My position enables me to leverage my interests and strengths in order to contribute to the success of Tourism Australia.
As a cross-functional government organisation, I have developed my understanding of a range of business units as well as of Australia's tourism landscape as a whole.
