10 Job Titles and Descriptions for Social Media PositionsHere is a list of the 10 social media job titles and descriptions for various responsibilities and social media activities. Social Media Planner: Develops proposals for digital advertisers, coordinates with media team regarding inventory, and may also manage media across mobile, web and email platforms. Social Media Analyst: The analyst communicates the results and trends of marketing campaigns to internal agencies and possibly directly to clients.
Social Media Coordinator: Coordinates marketing events with online activity and tracks the analytics of social media influence, more commonly associated with twitter and other social media distribution channels. But with this rise comes a boom in business for self-proclaimed social media gurus, and I should know. Here are 21 of the most ridiculous social media job titles that you’ll come across in your travels. It’s not even worth having a guess at what this means – presumably, it’s like being a Junior Social Media Capability Architect, only with a slightly better salary.
Okay, so I can appreciate the use of metaphor to suggest that you travel to foreign lands to spread the word about the good (Face)book, but unless you worship the internet as a god then you should probably leave this title well alone. This is the one that you’ll hear most often — even those with more reasonable titles find themselves described as gurus from time-to-time.
I jest, but the inability to use the English language correctly is much more of a crime than the dishing out of overblown job titles.
I agree, Brad – if you tell someone you work in social media, they automatically presume you spend all day on Facebook Chat and watching Epic Meal Time on YouTube.

Well the concepts that social media work by have been around since civilization began I guess, except for a poke being seen as a friendly gesture, which is new.
That is merely the wishful thinking of people who don’t want to embrace new technology and platforms that inconvenience them or weaken their value position within an organization or industry. A generalist role like Digital Marketing Specialist may require a skill set that includes experience with content marketing, analytics, SEO, PPC, and social media.
Perhaps the most interesting results are for “social media marketing,” which had only one social media-focused role in its top five job titles, three generalist positions, and one non-marketing role (Recruiter).
Since few roles would actually have “Google Analytics” in the title, it’s not surprising that the top job titles for that search are so varied.
The extreme volume of social media job listings doesn’t necessarily reflect a huge number of social media focused roles.
Job listings containing “social media marketing” or “social media management” have seen significant recent growth in addition to some staggered growth in the last several years. These numbers changed a bit when looking at keywords within the job title, as opposed to anywhere in the job listing.
Although social media skills are the most prevalent in job listings, they also have less value than the other skills analyzed in the study. People already know about social – if they’ve not seen the value by now, they’re unlikely to change their mind after what can only be described as one of your sermons.
It puts a lot of expectation on your expertise and I have most certainly not reached enlightenment in the area of social media.

Of the 20 most popular job titles within that data set, most job descriptions called for a broad range of marketing skills.
While you might expect to see a majority of specialist roles for these search queries such as Social Media Manager or PPC Specialist, most of the job titles are for generalist roles such as Digital Marketing Manager. The inclusion of Recruiter within the top five suggests that the need for social media skills extends beyond the marketing department. Social media has become an expected skill within a variety of roles, even non-marketing positions such as Recruiter and Customer Service Representative.
Notice that the salaries for “SEO,” “content marketing,” and "Google Analytics" increased when the keyword was in the job title. In fact, someone’s even created a social media job title generator, which does exactly what it says on the tin. Working in social media marketing does not put you on a par with Keith Richards and Mick Jagger. Yes job titles have been played around with way too much in my opinion and they are becoming completely absurd when it comes to social media.
Because Social Media is about Branding and Communication and in some cases customer service.
