HR Professionals need to respond to the social and communication changes that wide community usage of these tools bring to the workplace.
Microsoft is bullish about Office Web Apps and betting on social networking in the enterprise, according to the head of Microsoft's information worker business group.
As Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 head to business licence customers, information worker business group lead Jacob Jaffe told IT PRO why Microsoft is upbeat about the potential for its new free online tool Web Apps and why it's betting heavily on social networking. Microsoft has claimed that services from partners and third-party developers based around SharePoint 2010 could boost the economy by $6.7 billion.
Microsoft released Windows 7 last year, but some have suggested businesses have waited for the arrival of Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 to upgrade.
The add-on to Outlook will provide professional and social context to any Outlook users everyday email experience.

So in Outlook, you’ll be able to see a picture of contacts (pulled from their Linkedin profile), who they have recently connected to on the network, and any status updates they’ve posted on the site.
The add-on will ship with Microsoft 2010, but can be downloaded to work with Outlook 2003, and 2007. LinkedIn’s Director of Product Development, Elliot Shmukler says that the fundamental idea behind the product is to bring the value of LinkedIn to where professionals do their work and Outlook has a fundamentally professional userbase. Microsoft is an American multinational corporation that develops, manufactures, licenses, supports and sells computer software, consumer electronics and personal computers and services. LinkedIn is a professional networking site that allows its members to create business connections, search for jobs, and find potential clients. I feel very lucky in that regard: The dialogue has been invaluable to me, and not only at Microsoft.

In conjunction with the announcement of the beta of Microsoft’s Office 2010 at its Professional Developer Conference, LinkedIn and Microsoft have partnered to offer an add-on that integrates much of your LinkedIn contact information with your Outlook contacts.
The add-on will also show you the most recent professional information about a contact, including the most recent job and city that he or she lives in. The connection with Microsoft is a huge, considering the widespread user of Microsoft Outlook in professional environments.
