Facebook has turned on its new data center in western North Carolina, the second computing facility the company has designed and built solely for its own use. In those 16 months, Facebook says, nearly 2,000 people spent more than 1.2 million hours working on the facility. Tom Furlong, Facebook’s vice president of site operations, tells Wired that the data center has arrived two months ahead of the original schedule. Like fellow cloud data giants Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, Facebook is designing and building its own data centers in an effort to keep up with the exponential growth of its web services — and reduce the costs associated with running these massive computing facilities. As part of its effort to reduce power consumption in the data center, Facebook has also designed its own servers, and the North Carolina facility marks the debut of its second generation of web server designs, which the company is sharing with the rest of the world through the Open Compute Project.
In Facebook’s case, the company is highlighting the fact that its datacenter construction in the state of Oregon over the last five years has generated nearly 3,600 jobs.

The head count estimates are part of an economic impact study commissioned by Facebook and conducted by the consulting firm ECONorthwest.
Facebook designed and built its first datacenter on the Prineville campus, designs for which are the basis of the Open Compute Project. For example, ECONorthwest found that for every 10 direct jobs at Facebook, there were 14 additional jobs created statewide. Facebook datacenter construction in central Oregon started in 2009 and quickly ramped up over the next three years. Facebook is also taking credit for charitable contributions to the state in the form of donations to a local high school to support STEM education. Unlike other web giants such as Google and Amazon, Facebook does not view its hardware as a competitive advantage, believing that if it shares its designs with the rest of the world, it can improve them — and drive down the cost.

That total includes 650 jobs in the central part of the state at its Prineville campus, inland from the Oregon’s major population centers.
Previously, Facebook had leased space from commercial datacenters, facilities that it is currently winding down.
Following Facebook’s lead, Apple built a massive datacenter in the central Oregon city. Facebook currently operates its own datacenters in Forest City, North Carolina, and in Lulea, Sweden; it is building another one in Altoona, Iowa.
