Bicycle Association had a bike decked with
blooms for a competition, but only in 1966
did the event become yearly. Each car uses
up to 250,000 fresh flowers, and a total of
three million blooms are used. The parade
begins at 8am in Petofi Square, and heads
for the Nagyerdei Stadium, completing its
5km route early in the afternoon. This is
when crowds have a chance to examine the
displays close-up and listen to performing
groups, in anticipation of the fireworks and
street party at the day’s end.

FLOWER CARNIVAL 16-20 AUGUST
If you’re in Debrecen on 20 August, we
hope you’re not a hay fever sufferer! It’s
when the city traditionally marks the
festive day of St Stephen, the founder of
the Hungarian state, with a huge Flower
Carnival. In the week before you’ ll spot
any number of imaginatively designed
flower cars exhibited not just in Debrecen,
but other towns too. It’s a tradition dating
