Getting to the centre
From Henri Coanda Airport, take bus
no. 783 (which runs 24 hours) to the
city centre or no. 780 to the station.
It is 3.50 lei (€0.80) per trip, plus
3.70 lei for the Activ card you ‘load’
trips on to (which can be used on all
Bucharest public transport).
A slice of the city
Bucharest is often blissfully quiet
in August, as locals head for the
mountains or the seaside. The city
celebrate its birthday with
Zilele
Bucurestiului
, 15-18 September.
Expect outdoor concerts, festivals,
exhibitions and parades in and around
the Lipscani area.
Eating out
While there is no shortage of great
places to eat in the Old Town/
Lipscani area,
Divan
(thedivan.ro) at
Strada Franceza 46-48, is always a
reliable choice: terrific Turkish food
at reasonable prices. The courtyard
of
Veranda Casa Frumoasa
(Strada
Clopotarii Vechi 5, +40 (0)73 373
5932) is a gorgeous (if not cheap)
place to eat fine food from a French-
inspired menu which changes daily.
City suggestions
Verona Garden
(Strada Arthur
Verona 13-15, +40 (0)732 00 3060)
is the centre’s top outdoor café.
Found behind
Carturesti
, a superb
bookshop and art gallery, it is open
until 1am and attracts a laid-back
and extremely fashionable crowd.
And finally...
It is not the most bike-friendly city,
but cycling is the new big thing in
Bucharest. You can hire bikes for free
(bring some ID) at the main entrances
to Herastrau and Tineretului parks.

Visit
Kabaret Špacek
at Kopecná
46 near Husova, near the Cathedral,
for a great lunch in a slightly smoky,
alternative atmosphere. There’s a
great selection of beers here, too.
And finally…
Brno’s
Tap Your Own Beer Pubs
,
like The Pub (thepub.cz/brno/), allow
you to pour your own via a nifty pump
in the table. Brilliant for groups!
