Getting to the centre
We provide a shuttle bus transfer
between the airport and any address
in the centre. It is €18/€36 return.
A slice of the city
August is when most locals head
out of town for the cooler climes of
the mountains or the sea. Yes, the
summer festival season is in full swing
and there’s still plenty to do despite
the mass exodus – bring sensible
shoes if you plan on taking part in
September’s Fire Run (see below).
Eating out
El Boo
(Espigó Bac de Roda 1, +34
932 250 100, elboo.es) is situated
on a small promontory jutting out
to sea at Nova Mar Bella beach (see
picture). Sunbathe with the beautiful
people on the Veuve Clicquot terrace
(book day beds in advance) and feast
on excellent seafood and top-notch
rice dishes. In the Born, the newly
opened
Red Ant
(Carrer Tiradors 3-5,
+34 935 016 860, redantnoodles.com)
serves lively pan Asian dishes that are
perfect for late-night summer dining.
Try steamed pork buns, green mango
salad and firey noodle salads.
City suggestions
It’s a great time to rub shoulders
with locals at neighbourhood street
festas. If you’re in town don’t miss the
Festa de Sant Roc
in the Barri Gòtic,
all papier-mâché giants and human
towers (in the second weekend of
August); and the
Festa de Gràcia
for
all-night music, dancing and a castle
of fireworks (third week of August).
And finally…
The biggest festival of the year
is the
Festes de la Mercè
(week
beginning 24 September) when the
entire city takes to the streets to
celebrate its patron saint. It boasts
over 500 events, but the highlight
is the correfoc (literally ‘fire-run’)
where members of the public chase
fire-toting devils through the streets.
