Editor’s note
If you’re a regular reader of
Smile
, you’ll know that every
issue brings together reports from across the network to
serve as guides to your next adventure —whether you’re
up for exploring a busy urban center or keen on collecting
unforgettable stories along roads less traveled, preferably in
some remote countryside.
This month’s issue delivers an equal mix of both, starting with a handy map
to what you shouldn’t miss in Bangkok’s Lumpini Park, a sprawling green space
in the middle of one of Asia’s busiest and most dynamic capitals (page 40). The
calming oasis of trees, water features and foot trails is the city’s clever foil to
the surrounding clusters of concrete and seething road traffic. Next stop: Kuala
Lumpur, where we take a break from our usual coverage of its heritage spots
to discover the city’s more cosmopolitan corners (page 66). A few trendy stops
offer enough proof that KL is changing, and trading in parts of its traditional
personality to showcase its own version of contemporary cool. Then it’s on to
Saigon, where we sample the quick and tasty cuisine of the streets (page 78) —
always a good idea anywhere in Vietnam.
Back on Philippine soil, it gets even more exciting as two experts give us
exclusive access to their lifelong obsessions. Environmentalist and local tourism
advocate Lorenzo Tan has taken countless expeditions to explore far-flung
corners of the Philippines. This month, he takes us on a journey down the storied
Agusan River (page 86), once a highway for trading boats ferrying timber and
gold. Finally, author and restaurateur Amy Besa, who will climb every mountain
and cross every field in search of prized ingredients, opens up her cupboards
to show us a small fraction of the edible delights she’s collected from various
regions in the Philippines (page 94).
Wishing you all a September to remember.
