Too young to retire, too old to be doing the
same darn thing – Kerbside Gourmet’s
food truck owner Luan Ee is
the envy of many corporate
retirees yearning for a career
change in the sunset of
their working years.
The former
communications
practitioner spent
20
years working for
notable firms like Ogilvy
&
Mather before making
the switch to nourishing
hungry lunchers. Kerbside
Gourmet has a couple of
initiatives – in addition to
just being on wheels –
that distinguish it from
the usual startup hawker
stall, which she says tend
to have an “unhealthy”
connotation.
I’m all for authentic
heritage food, but hawker
stalls just aren’t feeding
people right,” says Luan.

There are too many carbs. My food has
more protein and fibre.” Some “healthy”
specialities on her menu include pea
purée, fish curry pasta and cold
Japanese mentaiko pasta.
The entrepreneur works
alone, but has future
plans to use the truck for
social initiatives. “I’m in
talks with underprivileged
schools,” says Luan.
For every main dish
we sell, we cook a free
meal for a hungry student
in Singapore.” The working
mother says her mobile food
stall also aims to bring back
street-eating culture, since
the government pushed
food carts into hawker
centres back in the ’60s.
People will have to hold
their food, so they won’t
have hands to look at their
mobile phones,” she jokes.
