California’s famously picturesque Highway 1 doesn’t disappoint. The route is a
grand procession of soaring cliffs, ragged promontories, and vast sloping hills,
the road bending beside an ocean of brilliant blue, passing lovely little towns
along the way. Inland, you have the wild beauty of wine country, cultivated by
some of the best vintners in the state. Continue south and you hit Santa Barbara,
home to upscale restaurants and magnificent taco shacks. There is so much to
see and do on this journey, you feel you could make it time and
again—and make it new. In any event, it would be fun to try.
