ALL IN THE FAMILY
WHENWE BEGAN
commissioning family travel stories for thismonth’s special package,
we had something specific in mind: heartwarming, I-never-really-knew-my-dad-until-
we’d-gazed-upon-the-pyramids-at-dawn stuff. What we got were brushes with molten
lava, screamingfits at noveltyhotels, andparentswitha knack for rampingup teenangst.
The thing is, travel doesn’t always strengthen family ties—at least, not the way you’d
expect. It o en tests them, twangs them, leaves them looking frayed. Taken out of the
context of the home, our individual foibles can assumemon-
strous proportions, as if exposed to B-movie gamma rays,
crushing familial coping mechanisms underfoot.
Pick through the rubbleof theseminor catastrophes,
though, and you’ll see that our initial expectations
weren’t so far off the mark. The overriding spirit in
these tales is of tolerance, good humor and, it has to
be said, enduring love. Referring to an incident that
had occurred decades earlier, one of our contributors
writes at the endof his piece, “Sorry, Dad.” It doesn’t get
more heartwarming than that.
