The next time you travel to Denver for work, why not make it a Bizcation
TM
and
see more than just conference rooms? Add a day or two to your business trip and
explore the spectacular towns that lie within driving distance of the Mile High City.
Begin your drive with a stop at The Buckhorn Exchange.
As much a museum as it is a restaurant, this historic
outpost is steeped in rich tales of the Wild West frontier.
Presidents, Hollywood glitterati and railroad workers
of yore have all enjoyed the exotic frontier fare
offered at this legendary restaurant.
Once you satisfy your appetite, head west on I-70
toward Breckenridge. The road steadily climbs 4,000
feet in elevation, passing through scenic forests rich
in wildlife, including Colorado’s bighorn sheep. Plan
ahead and rent an SUV to make your ascent easier.
On your way, stop at Georgetown’s historic railroad
loop. This amazing train ride takes you on a 75-minute
journey to the old mining town of Silver Plume through
some spectacular Rocky Mountains terrain.
Back on I-70, you’ll pass through the Eisenhower/
Johnson Memorial Tunnel, which at over 11,000 feet
above sea level is the highest vehicular tunnel in the
world. Turn south on Route 9 to reach Breckenridge.
Spend time walking along French Street and Harris
Street amid the town’s beautiful Victorian homes. Settle
in for the night at one of the many comfortable resorts
or lodges. If you’re here in June, you can witness the
celebrations surrounding Kingdom Days, including
the quirky outhouse races.
Just an hour south of Denver on I-25 is Colorado
Springs. It’s home to Pikes Peak, one of Colorado’s
fourteeners – mountains that rise at least 14,000 feet
above sea level. You can hike the mountain by foot
or take the cogwheel train. Of course, if you are in a
convertible, you can roll back the top and drive to the
summit while soaking in the amazing views. Whichever
way you choose to scale the peak, it’s an experience
you won’t soon forget. Yes, Denver offers a lot to do in
a weekend, but then, there’s always another business
trip and another Bizcation
