When It Rains,
It Pours
A debonair umbrella for the discreet tippler
BY JACQUELINE DETWILER • PHOTOGRAPHS BY LISA SHIN
Most people, if they’re honest with themselves, will admit
to wanting to be Oscar Wilde at least a li le bit. Master of
the quip, Wilde was the sort of man who never had to wait
until he was outside on the sidewalk to hit upon the perfect
thing to say. But if he did—and if it were raining—he’d
probably be standing under an umbrella like this delight-
fully foppish two-piece construction from Swaine Adeney
Brigg. Made of burled malacca cane, tulip wood and sturdy
nylon, it’s big enough for two people and, best of all, it con-
tains a flask concealed in the handle. Could it get you into
trouble? Certainly. But as Wilde himself said, “Everything
is dangerous, my dear fellow. If it wasn’t so, life wouldn’t be
worth living.”
