onlydevelopedfine-tunedmechanical skills, hewasan
amazing inventor.Withhis inventionof thehydraulic
lift in1911,GarWoodsealedhis fortuneand turnedhis
full attention tospeedboatbuildingand racing. In1921,
GarWood introduced the33-footBabyGar, a three-
cockpit runabout. In the1930s,Gar introduced the
Speedster, Utility, Express Cruiser, and the rear-

Centuryboats
TheCenturyBoatCompanywas founded inMilwaukee
in1926buildingcanoes, racers, andfishingboats.Two
years later,Century relocated toManistee,Michigan,
where they began to buildmahogany runabouts,
utilities, and outboards. By the late 1930s, Century
offered 28models and held theworld outboard speed
recordof 50.93milesperhour. In the1950s,Century
launched theResorter line,whichservedasoneof the
first towboats for a new sport calledwater skiing.
