After finishing an apprenticeship as a cabinetmaker in1993, German
artistGabrielWiesedecidedhedidn’twant tomake conventional fur-
niture and instead set out toexplorenewuses for familiarmaterials.
Ultimately, hediscovered cork, anaturally shed treebark that has
beenusedoneverything frombulletinboards andwall coverings to
themore-familiarwine stopper. Using the latter likebricks,Wiese
transforms thediscarded corks into a collectionof one-of-a-kind
chairs. “They are as comfortable as they are functional,” says Lois
