GETANARTEDUCATION
MOMAPS1
One of the country’s largest contemporary
art institutions, MOMAPS1 staged its first
major show in 1976. Themuseum occupies the
building that once housed LIC’s first school.
Classrooms are now galleries, and the boiler
room hosts a long-term installation by Saul
Melman, “Central Governor,” which involved
the artist plating the old furnace in gold leaf.
TheWarmUp, an outdoor music series, is
slated to return for its 19th year on Saturday
evenings in the courtyard, with experimental
livemusic andDJs. Visitors looking for year-
round entertainment can catch their weekly
Sunday Sessions.

THEATER
Established in 2005, TheChocolate
Factory Theater has staged performances
by local, national and international artists.
Its founders, Brian Rogers and Sheila
Lewandowski, converted a former hardware
store into a downstairs with a low ceiling
and a lofty second story, so themultitude
of annual visiting performers can pick which
space best suits their show. Each June, the
Chocolate Factory puts on its annual Taste
of LIC festival on the scenic waterfront of
Gantry Plaza State Park. Slated for its 11th
consecutive year this summer, the event
brings together dozens of restaurateurs and
small businesses to raise funds for the arts.
