PERSPECTIVE
I
t’snosecret that theairline
industry, and travel ingeneral,
haschangeddrasticallyover
theyears.When Istartedwith
AmericanAirlines in 1984, the
majorityofouraircraftwereBoeing727s
andwehad just startedflying theMD80.
Today the727 is longgoneand the
MD80willberetired in2017, so it’sout
with theoldand inwith thenew. In2011,
weplaced the largestaircraftorder in
aviationhistory. In thepast twoyears
alonewe’ve takendeliveryofmore than
250aircraft– that’s
anaverageof twonew
planeseveryweek.All
of that combinedbrings
ouraverageaircraft
age to 11years,making
American’sfleet the
youngestof anyU.S.
networkcarrier.And
withhundredsofnew
planesstillon the
way, it’sonlygetting
younger.Thesenew
planesarealsomore
fuel efficient than their
predecessorsandcome
equippedwithWi-Fi capability, in-seat
entertainmentandpowerateveryseat.
Andyes, there is that “newairplane
smell.”
Ifyou’reflying internationally, you’ll
notice thatwerecentlyupdatedour
Boeing777-200sand767-300switha
modern interior.Both feature fully lie-
flat seats inBusinessClassand improved
entertainmentoptions throughout the
aircraft.Andof course, thenewBoeing
787Dreamliner isasdreamyas it sounds.
Although it’swhat’son the inside
thatmattersmost, the
majorityofouraircraft
arenowsportingour
new livery. I’llmiss
seeing theclassic, buffed
silver look, but it’sa
beautiful sight tosee the
new tails linedupatour
gates.
