Put a smart thermostat and a smart ceiling fan together and you get "big ass" cost and electricity savings.
By circulating air, even the lowest-tech ceiling fans can cool a room and allow you to turn down the AC.
Now there’s the potential to run the thermostat at a higher temperature, compensated by the cooling effect of the fan. Big Ass Fans started life as the HVLS Fan Company, but as lore has it, later changed its name when customers would often comment on its, indeed, big ass fans, which were originally designed to efficiently cool large industrial spaces where air conditioning was not feasible. CEO Carey Smith claims Haiku is the most efficient ceiling fan in the world, and it has the EnergyStar ratings to prove it. In June, the company announced a new Haiku “smart” model, with embedded sensors and a CPU that turns the fan on and off automatically when a person enters or leaves the room. With aerodynamic air foils and ultra-quiet, efficient motors that were developed by an in-house engineer, its market soon expanded to churches, schools, and most recently homes, with the introduction of a notably smaller model. The Haiku, as the residential product is called, uses only two to 30 watts of power depending on the speed--less than an incandescent light bulb.
Smith says the Haiku would allow residents to raise their thermostat setpoints by six degrees and save 30% on air conditioning costs at the same level of comfort. It’s not clear how much people are really demanding, say, a garage door that communicates with their thermostat.
That’s the idea behind the partnership announced today between Nest and Big Ass Fans, a 15-year-old company based in Lexington, Kentucky. The Haiku, as the residential product is called, uses only two to 30 watts of power depending on the speed—less than an incandescent light bulb. The Haiku with SenseME technology, as the smart fan model is called, will begin shipping this summer. Del Mar Designs will ship the product at no cost to anywhere in the 48 Continental United States. Hello, I like Del Mar Designs on Facebook = Trish Froehner and follow them on Twitter = trishden. An energy efficient fan, which saves power continously and delivers high air thrust at just 48 watts.

With power costs going through the roof, it’s no wonder some of us are limiting the use of energy-hungry air conditioners, choosing instead to sweat it out during those long hot days and steamy nights. Even better, on those really hot days when you need air conditioning, you can reduce its running cost by up 40%* if you use it in conjunction with a ceiling fan.
Beacon Lighting has Australia’s biggest range of ceiling fans, and here’s 6 of our favourites. You can’t go past a fan with a DC motor, which uses 40% less electricity than standard ceiling fans. Check out our Airfusion Climate, a sleekly styled fan available in White, Brushed Chrome and Antique Brass, with 6-speed remote control.
The Woody fan is considered one of the most energy efficient on the market today, and is suitable for indoor, outdoor and coastal areas (fan must be fully undercover).
The Airfusion Airlie boasts a real value-for-money price, while still delivering great energy efficiency and style. LED is one of the most efficient light sources on the planet, so when it’s combined with the energy efficiency of a ceiling fan, you know you’re onto a winner. Our Futura Eco LED fan with 17W LED (1100 lumen, warm white) light is brand new to the market, and is suitable for use in indoor and alfresco areas. The Bordono fan with LED compatible light operates by a pull cord system, eliminating the need to run extra wiring or use a remote. But most people are lazy and don’t bother to turn on their fans." class="">By circulating air, even the lowest-tech ceiling fans can cool a room and allow you to turn down the AC.

With the Nest integration via a smartphone app, the fan and AC can work together in concert without any input from a human." class="">The problem is that to get these benefits, a person has to manually adjust the thermostat. But Nest’s latest partnership with the company Big Ass Fans (also not making that name up) is a more interesting one for homeowners, because the integration could save a lot on your summer air conditioning bill.
But most people are lazy and don’t bother to turn on their fans, or if they do, they run a fan only when not using an air conditioner.

Haiku fans without any smart technology have been on the market for several years and almost 60,000 have been sold so far. The handsomely designed grill and flanges define a sophisticated and subtle beauty while still maintaining a traditional feel.

That’s why ceiling fans are fast becoming the must-have accessory for every home – if not every room. The breeze from a ceiling fan can make you feel degrees cooler*, while using the same amount of power as a 60 watt light globe.
Available in 132cm or 152cm in White or Brushed Chrome with ash wood blades, this distinctive fan includes a 6-speed remote.
Available with or without an energy efficient light, you can choose White, Brushed Chrome or Antique Brass in 122cm or 132cm. But a fan and an air conditioner that talked to one another and both automatically adjust to your temperature preferences? This Fan is Energy Star Rated which will help reduce the use of electricity while still adding comfort to a room. Now there’s the potential to run the thermostat at a higher temperature, compensated by the cooling effect of the fan. For the average home, this translates to annual savings of almost 600 kilowatt hours or $78 based on current electricity rates, and more than 800 pounds of carbon dioxide. Energy Star fans can move 20% more air effectively and use approximately 50% less electricity that standard fans.
Compare that to your average air conditioner, which uses 15 - 60 times* the amount of electricity, and you can see why a ceiling fan is such a great energy-efficient option.
