Adelaide’s newest tourist attraction – the Commonwealth Bank RoofClimb Adelaide Oval – is now officially open, with the first tours commencing today.
The Adelaide Oval will this weekend welcome the four millionth visitor since its award-winning redevelopment two years ago, which has generated hundreds of millions of dollars in economic benefits and supported hundreds of jobs.
Seven of South Australia’s most famous sports media identities have been recognised with induction into the new Adelaide Oval Media Hall of Fame. It’s just over a month until the opening of the RoofClimb Adelaide Oval – and it now has a new naming rights partner. Join the Adelaide City Tour 581 to discover this remarkable city which combines old withnew so elegantly. Adelaide Oval has been completely redeveloped and the new-look venue will host its first official event on Saturday 29th March 2014 with the big South Australian showdown between Port Adelaide and the Adelaide Crows.
Adelaide Oval has enjoyed a proud history as one of Australia’s premier sporting and entertainment venues for more than 140 years. Adelaide Oval has long been regarded as one of the more picturesque Test cricket venues in the world and that has been kept in mind during the redevelopment. Phase two of the redevelopment which commenced in early 2012 involved the construction of two new grandstands, the southern stand (14,000 capacity) which was completed first, followed by the eastern stand (19,000 capacity), which has boosted the total seating capacity to 50,083 plus standing room for 3,500 on the hill. Both the Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide will be all their AFL home matches at the newly completed venue, having both moved from AAMI Stadium (Football Park). Adelaide Oval is located on the edge of the CBD and as part of the Riverbank master plan, a new footbridge has been constructed to link the venue to the city. There is a sandy white beach, charming heritage hotels and bustling shops, sidewalks cafes and summer entertainment. Pass through Goolwa, gateway to the internationally significant wetlands of the Coorong National Park and the end of the mighty Murray River’s long journey. Widely acknowledged as the greatest Test batsman of all time, the reinvented Adelaide Oval is honouring its national hero Sir Donlad Bradman in a unique way. In order to perfect this technique, Bradman invented his own solo cricket game, using a cricket stump for a bat, and a golf ball. Adelaide Oval has enjoyed a proud history as one of Australia’s premier sporting and entertainment venues for more than 140 years.

Historically, the Adelaide Oval has been busy during summer, but not fully utilised in winter. The redevelopment has delivered a multi-use venue, capable of hosting football, cricket, rugby, soccer, concerts and more.
Adelaide Oval hosted the second Ashes Test in December 2013 and this created a firm deadline for a significant portion of the redeveloped stadium to be ready for operation.
The five-day crowd of more than 153,000 for December’s Ashes Test was the fifth largest in Adelaide’s Test match history and the Saturday crowd of 36,414 was the most to watch a day’s cricket at the ground since 1955.
How do you market the venue to international audiences in order to increase tourism to the area?
Adelaide Oval is internationally renowned and has long been a significant draw card for visitors coming to Adelaide. A redevelopment project of this scale presents a multitude of challenges throughout the process. Our Mechanical team of skilled tradesman and apprentices successfully set out and installed three major heating and chilled water plant rooms, including hybrid coolers at roof level, which were connected to fain coil and air handling units throughout the facility. Leave the coach by the River Torrens and stroll over the river to the Oval, perhaps on the new curving footbridge. The venue has been transformed to become the new home of AFL football in South Australia and now has a capacity of 53,583. In late 2009, the State Government committed $535 million to redevelop Adelaide Oval with the view to delivering an internationally renowned, world-class venue for the 21st Century. The first stage was the construction of a new 14,000-seat western grandstand, replacing the old members stand, which was completed in November 2010. The famous hill has been retained along with the historic scoreboard and the distinctive Moreton Bay figs which were planted in the 1890s. Or take in the sandstone cliffs, giant red gums and weeping willows on a luxury cruiser or historic paddlesteamer. Travel the picturesque Adelaide Hills and into the Fleurieu Peninsula, where the vines meet the sea.
Then visit Victor Harbor, one of South Australia’s most popular seaside towns, before returning to Adelaide via the popular wine region, McLaren Vale. Having spent $535 Aus million on a huge redevelopment plan spanning 100 weeks, the team behind this historic venue has brought in a replica water tank for visitors to practise just as Sir Donald Bradman did. A water tank, mounted on a curved brick stand, stood on a paved area behind the family home. This meant the project has been delivered to an almost impossible 100 week timeline – during which time the construction team has had to battle scorching heat and torrential rain as well live sport and fans using the Oval.

Football (Australian rules) at Adelaide Oval will mean the stadium hosts another 22 major sporting events each year – and that’s before we add other major events and entertainment such as concerts.
In short, the complexity and sheer investment of time to deliver such projects is not to be underestimated. The intricacy of this project saw the team effectively fabricate and install copper tube ranging up to 300mm. It remains the home of cricket and will also play host to other events including rugby league and union, football and concerts. The redeveloped oval will sit proudly within a revitalised riverbank and parklands precinct; home to cricket, football and providing an exceptional venue for a host of other major sporting events and entertainment.
The Fleurieu Peninsula is South Australia’s premier holiday destination and recreational playground. When hit into the curved brick facing of the stand, the ball rebounded at high speed and varying angles—and Bradman would attempt to hit it again.
The redeveloped Adelaide Oval will be South Australia’s home of cricket and football (Australian rules), while also providing an exceptional venue for a host of other major sporting events and entertainment.
I’m pleased to confirm the project has remained on schedule and under budget throughout the process. In addition to this, our Functions & Events department has achieved a significant increase in business – we’re taking calls locally, from throughout Australia and overseas and already has bookings as far out as 2016. However, the right result can produce significant benefits – for the venue but perhaps more importantly for the local community.
The region is made up of rolling green hills, dairy pastures, orchards, farms and vineyards all bounded by picturesque beaches and rugged coastlines. We spoke to Andrew Daniels, CEO of The Adelaide Oval, to discover what this exciting redevelopment project has brought to this 143 year old venue. Major construction works commenced in the first quarter of 2012 and the redevelopment will be completed at the end of March 2014. In the case of Adelaide Oval we now have a high performing asset that all South Australians are proud of; an asset that will repay the investment many times over for the people of this State.
