Categories

Categories are located under the Coding section inside the Citavi folder. All the categories and sub-categories from Citavi are imported as codes and sub-codes retaining the original hierarchy and sorted as per the original order in Citavi.

References

In NVivo, both references with PDFs and references without PDFs are in the folder Files/References:

  • References with PDF: The PDF is imported in NVivo. Direct quotations that are linked to a Knowledge Organizer category are coded to the relevant code in NVivo.

Direct quotations that are not linked to a Knowledge Organizer category are coded to the code No categories in NVivo. User-generated core statements for Direct Quotations become annotations in NVivo.

  • References without PDF: Where a hyperlink is included in the Online address field in Citavi, the hyperlink will appear at the top of the document representing the reference in NVivo so you will be able to access the original article.

The abstract text from Citavi Overview/Abstract is also imported into NVivo as well as any Direct Quotations with their user-generated core statements. If the Direct Quotations are linked to Knowledge Organizer categories in Citavi, they will be coded to the relevant code in NVivo.

If the Direct Quotations are not linked to Knowledge Organizer categories in Citavi, they will be coded to the code No categories in NVivo.

References file classification details

A new file classification type called Reference is created and linked to all the references imported from Citavi. The attributes for the Reference classification types are created based on each references’ metadata (Example - Author, title, year, etc).

Direct quotations

Direct quotations are brought into NVivo together with any user generated core statements. For more information, see References.

Comments, indirect quotations and summaries

  • References with PDF - A memo is created linked to the relevant PDF which contains any comments, indirect quotations or summaries created in Citavi.

If they have been linked to a category in Citavi, they will be coded to the relevant code in NVivo. In Windows only, Links are used to link the text to the part of the PDF that they reference.

  • References without PDF - Comments, indirect quotations and summaries are added to the reference document along with the direct quotations, abstract and hyperlink. If they have been linked to a category in Citavi, they will be coded to the relevant code in NVivo.
