In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is a medical procedure that many couples and individuals turn to when they are facing fertility issues. The procedure of IVF has many advantages for a couple with infertility problems, however, like all medical procedures, it also has some disadvantages and risks.  Before embarking upon an IVF cycle, it is extremely important that a couple or individual understands what the advantages and disadvantages are and as such, they need to see a fertility specialist who can outline the entire process for them, so informed decisions can be made. A successful pregnancy and a healthy baby born are, of course, the biggest advantages of undertaking an IVF procedure!
Another advantage to IVF is that it can be used to help bypass problems with a woman’s fallopian tubes.  IVF was first pioneered for this very reason so women who had tubal damage or blockages could still have children of their own.
Should a failed fertilisation be the result, then the next step would be for the couple to consider having another IVF cycle, but this time try intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) as the method of fertilisation.  If this treatment fails to produce fertilization, then it is time for the couple to reassess their options with their fertility specialist. IVF can also be used as a treatment option enabling any embryos that are created, to be tested for some abnormalities before they are transferred into the uterus (womb). Another disadvantage of IVF is because the process involves an operative procedure, there are the associated risks of infection, anaesthetic risks and haemorrhage.
IVF can also be an expensive medical procedure, and if you have access to Medicare entitlements, some of the costs of IVF are subsidised, but there are still out of pockets expenses that come with IVF treatment. As previously mentioned, with any medical procedure there are possible risks involved, and the embryo transfer procedure is no exception. A new study from researchers in Sweden suggests that babies conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF) have a slightly higher risk for developing cancer as a child or young adult than babies conceived without IVF. The higher cancer risk for IVF babies probably has nothing to do with the way they were conceived. Previous studies have also linked IVF to other complications including premature birth, respiratory issues and low birth weight all of which could add to the increased cancer risk.
Even though the results of the study represent a 42 percent increased risk, the true cancer risk for IVF babies much lower. A mother has posted a picture of a baby girl lying asleep in the middle of hundred of syringes to illustrate the physical and emotional turmoil experienced by people who go through IVF. The image was posted to Facebook by the Sher Institute, one the largest fertility clinics in the US, after the child's mother, Angela, finally succeeded in becoming pregnant after more than a year-and-a-half of cycles.
It has since been shared more than 3,000 times as parents around the globe have shared their stories of trying to conceive a baby biologically related to them. According to Angela's doctor, Molina Dayal, the picture does not even show all the fertility treatment drugs used to conceive. Another said of Angela's picture: "Didn't even tell my husband what this was, just handed him the phone.
The first IVF baby, Louise Brown, was conceived in a dish at a Cambridgeshire fertility clinic 37 years ago and five million babies around the world have been born through IVF since.
So a very nervous 9 months, several scans, morning sickness, carpal tunnel syndrome and SPD later, we began the home straight!

We got to the hospital just before 6am, my contractions stayed at 2mins apart and I was already 4cms dilated. Finally I could get in the pool I felt the tension leave my body and each contraction felt concentrated to where it should be instead of everywhere else. Holy moly, this baby making, giving birth business isn’t simple for some of us is it?! Just after Christmas (cripes – nearly a whole month ago!) Mike, the kids and I went on our first family skiing holiday to Chantemerle in Serre Chevalier!
A year ago today I started a challenge; The castle challenge, where I aimed to see all the castles in Northumberland with Reuben and anyone else who cared to join us. A long-term collaborative study has found that babies conceived by IVF or other assisted technologies grow-up healthy & happy. Adults who have been conceived through IVF and other assisted reproductive technologies (ART) have mostly grown up as healthy individuals, comparing well to those conceived naturally, the world's largest study into ART young adults has found. The study showed young adults (aged 18-29 years) who were conceived using ART had similar quality of life to non-ART children along with a normal body mass index and history of pubertal development. Researchers plan to invite the group for further follow up so that they can assess their fertility and continue to evaluate their health status to determine if there are any important lifelong medical or other legacies of ART. 7 Natural Ways to Fight the Signs of AgeingAre you starting to notice the first signs of ageing on your skin? 10 hacks to organize the power cord clutter at homeRemove eyesores with these organization hacks! In fact, 1 in 6 couples will need some form of fertility assistance in their life time.  Whilst there are treatment options other than IVF, such as ovulation induction and intra uterine insemination, IVF is certainly the most talked about of these treatment options. With the advent of IVF using ICSI, men who have had a vasectomy or have a very low sperm count now have the potential father children that are biologically theirs.
In some instances, couples can be at risk of having children born with conditions such as Down’s Syndrome or Cystic Fibrosis, and using IVF with pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) or comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), the incidences of these conditions can be reduced. In fact, less than 50 percent of all couples starting an IVF cycle will achieve a pregnancy. Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS) is also a risk that is only associated with treatment where the ovaries are stimulated through the use of medications, to make multiple eggs.  This of course is what happens in IVF and as such, OHSS is a risk for patients undergoing this treatment. However, many couples are unaware of the serious nature of the risks of multiple pregnancy, and the frequency with which these complications can occur. You may also request a free consultation where you and your partner can get all of your IVF questions answered in a comfortable, relaxed setting.
Some research has also suggested that IVF increases the risk for autism and stillbirths, though more research is needed.
These drugs are used to stimulate the ovaries to develop mature eggs ready for fertilisation, with the type of drug used depends on the fertility problem in question. Three rounds of IVF and 3 miscarriages (1 of those a natural pregnancy) but finally 3rd time (IVF) lucky we hit the jackpot! I decided to take a walk with mum that afternoon and stomped about as best I could with my SPD strap round my hips. Despite never having skied before, I finally agreed to have a ski holiday under the condition that I could have some lessons in advance.

Over the year, Reuben and I, and our motley crew of friends, family and people we didn’t know, visited over 40 castles.
Educational outcomes, including tertiary admission ranked scores and completion of tertiary education, were also similar between the two groups.
Of those who do become pregnant, not all of the pregnancies will result in a baby: A little over 25 percent of IVF cycles started, result in a live birth. If you transfer more than one embryo, there is a chance that all of the embryos will implant, leading to multiple pregnancies. To couples considering IVF, the test tube option might start to sound like a bad deal considering the $15,000 average price tag, not to mention the physical and emotional cost. Bengt Kellan of the University of Lund in Sweden says the increased risk is more likely associated with the reason why parents choose IVF in the first place.
The same goes for the link between cancer and IVF as Kallen’s study, published in the August 2010 issue of the journal Pediatrics, was the first to look at such a large population. To this day I still find it hard to revisit the roller coaster of emotions we experienced whilst trying to reach our ultimate goal of becoming parents, everything from desperation to excitement, anger and depression to complete elation. We had discussed at length the pain I was in through the SPD and how frustrated I had been with Braxton hicks coming and going, she agreed to try a stretch and sweep that day (not for the faint hearted!).
Off I waddled to the toilet only to discover a bloody show in my pants and a rather odd trickling sensation! Luckily a pool room was free so I waddled down to the Acorn suite, 10mins after arriving I had gone to 6cms.
Freddie is now 17mths old and he is my world, I’m so lucky to have such a fantastic little boy who amazes me and makes me laugh everyday. Today I thought I would reblog my Easy Pancake Recipe, which I first published here on the blog back in 2013 when Reuben was a mere year old. In Australia, clinics are leading the way in reducing the incidence of multiple pregnancies as a result of IVF by only transferring a single embryo on the majority of cases. If mom and dad are struggling with infertility problems, their genetics could have something to do with the cancer risks. Unfortunately she couldn’t do it and said my cervix was too far back and she would see me the following week as she didn’t think this baby was anywhere near making an appearance!
Information provided whether medical or scientific, may or may not be relevant to the viewer’s circumstances and should always be discussed with a medical professional prior to acting on it. For first time mum, Claire (who also runs an amazing beauty and massage business in Bedford), she had to go through 3 rounds of IVF before finally getting her precious little bundle.
I rang the delivery suite who told me to come in as I was due in 2days anyway, they asked if I had any pains to which I replied no, as I felt fine. With every contraction my entire body tensed up, my jaws were clenched and I had to stand on tiptoes, don’t ask me why! This is not an uncommon story and in fact I have some close friends who have an IVF baby so I’m sure there are other mummies who can relate.
I felt a building feeling which began to hurt, I told the midwife she said rightio see you soon and hung up just as the mother of all contractions ripped through my body, it was now 5.05am.
