A baby girl in China was born carrying two fetuses in her abdomen the Hong Kong Medical Journal has reported.
In prenatal scans a large mass was seen in the baby's abdomen which doctors believed could have been a tumour. When these were removed they were found to be two small fetuses, complete with spines, well-developed rib cages and primitive brain tissue.
Less than 200 cases of twin fetus-in-fetu, as this phenomena is known, have been reported worldwide and is estimated to occur in just 1 in 500,000 births. It is not yet known how this occurs, some believe it could be the case that a baby in the womb absorbs a twin (or in this case two triplets). A baby girl with a rare, mysterious medical condition was found to be ‘pregnant’ with twins when born. The girl, born to Chinese mainland parents in Queen Elizabeth Hospital Hong Kong, had to undergo surgery at just three weeks old to remove them. The condition, known as foetus in fetu occurs in just one in 500,000 births in the world and less than 200 cases have ever been reported. Dr Yu Kai-man, a specialist in obstetrics and gynaecology, said: ‘It was almost impossible to detect during the prenatal check-up, as the embryo inside the baby was too small. The birth was reported in the Hong Kong Medical Journal which suggested it was possibly linked to the mother having multiple abortions. And for added Zinc and Omega-3s (for fighting the stretch mark), I then had Pecan Porridge (porridge which I added about 7 pecans, some flax seeds (of course) and some maple syrup). I also found this picture on a rather interesting site called Shitty Fabulous Lives of a baby that was born at 30 weeks…it makes my heart bleed a little bit but the wee thing is still pretty big (where on earth is my stomach if mini-Mike is that big?!

At this stage I understand that the little bean is now spending its awake time with its eyes open pondering the dark existence. Just after Christmas (cripes – nearly a whole month ago!) Mike, the kids and I went on our first family skiing holiday to Chantemerle in Serre Chevalier! A year ago today I started a challenge; The castle challenge, where I aimed to see all the castles in Northumberland with Reuben and anyone else who cared to join us. More research showed that the fetuses, with a combined weight of less than an ounce were 8-10 weeks old. This is one unbelievable rare condition known as fetus-in-fetu, occurring in only about 1 in every 500,000 births. According to the case study published in the Hong Kong Medical Journal this month, this happens when a partially developed fetus becomes incorporated into a normally developing fetus (its twin) in the womb.
Gladly, the baby girl born in 2010 successfully recovered from the rare condition after having surgery.
When the baby was born she was admitted to a neonatal unit and at 14 days new scans revealed the mass was in fact made up of two separate structures. I think it’s because I hit 30 weeks pregnant yesterday, which is entering the stretch mark phase.
I’m still managing to stuff entire meals in though, it normally takes an hour before I start regretting it). Junior’s brain development is on hyperdrive and shall I tell you one thing it’s not thinking about (MIKE)?

I know it is completely insane to think there is a full on baby in there, arms, legs, head and all! Despite never having skied before, I finally agreed to have a ski holiday under the condition that I could have some lessons in advance. Over the year, Reuben and I, and our motley crew of friends, family and people we didn’t know, visited over 40 castles. This is exactly the case of a newborn baby girl in Hong Kong who appeared to have something unusual in her abdomen.
Each fetus was found to have its own rib cage, spine, umbilical cord, brain matter, intestines, and 4 limbs.

I just couldn’t imagine it and even after we went for our last scan, all I could imagine was giving birth to a ball! Today I thought I would reblog my Easy Pancake Recipe, which I first published here on the blog back in 2013 when Reuben was a mere year old.
