If you need to build a handicap accessible ramp to attach to your deck be aware that there are very specific rules that must be followed.
One aspect we haven’t covered is building a shed ramp so I was glad to help a friend build a ramp for his shed a couple of weeks ago.
The framing of the shed has a little lip underneath the door, and to begin, we ripped a 2 x 4″ so that our ledger board would mount flush with the face of the shed. Making sure it was completely level, we anchored the 2 x 6″ ledger board underneath the shed doors with lag screws (and washers). We used a 2 x 4″ to estimate a comfortable slope for our ramp, and we staked out an area just big enough to fit the concrete blocks.
While my friend began working on the ramp stringers, I screwed a 2 x 4″ along the bottom side of the ledger board.
We cut the deck boards to length, predrilled holes and screwed the boards to the stringers. My friend painted the entire ramp to match his shed, and this has the added benefit of another protective layer.
The top of the ramp is about 1″ below the floor level, and that sits just underneath the doors. Wheelchair ramps are typically built in order to improve home accessibility for people who can't use stairs or need a gentler, less stressful way to enter or leave their home. There are critical elements that must be considered prior to hammering the first nail, such as the specific point of entry to your home, the available area for ramp creation, the slope of the ramp based on the height of the level that the wheelchair must get to and local building codes. The choice of the door to place the ramp on will be influenced by several issues including, ease of access from the points within the house to the doorway, the width of the doorways and if a ramp can easily be accommodated to any existing features of the doorway, such as stairs, platforms or porches. Many aspects of the design of a ramp are limited by the space available and obstacles (such as trees, buildings and walkways) that affect where it can be located.
The angle of the ramp surfaces and the length or run of the ramp is a critical project consideration. If a ramp run has a rise greater than 6 inches or is longer than 72 inches, then it's recommended to have handrails on both sides of the ramp. The actual material used for the ramp surface can be selected based on personal preference but should be stable, firm and slip-resistant in all weather circumstances.
Measure the height from the upper landing location (this can be a porch, a deck, etc.) to the ground level. Now that you know the total run distance, or ramp length needed, select a ramp configuration that will work for your house. Start at the upper landing by locating the landing platform along the desired edge of the house or deck.
Once you've selected the exact location of your landing, place a reference nail 1 ¾ inches in on both corners of your landing. Locate batterboards approximately 7 feet perpendicular from the house edge where you placed your reference nails. Tie one end of the cord to the reference nail marking the left edge of the platform, and attach the other end to the batterboard. Now measure 3 feet along the house edge that the landing platform will attach to and mark that spot.
Assuming a 60-inch landing platform, measure 58 ¼ inches from the wall along the cords on the left and right edges of the platform and mark them. Once the concrete footings have hardened, secure the metal post hanger to the J-bolt with a nut and washer. Using the determined slope and run, and following the steps above, either construct another landing platform and continue the ramp or place the posts at the end of the ramp.


At the end of the ramp, a landing should be constructed either of the same materials as the ramp, or you may choose to use concrete. An access ramp could be viewed either as an angled deck or flat stairs, and it shares construction techniques with both.
Keep the maximum pitch (the number of feet the ramp rises for every foot of horizontal run) to 1 in 12, and if possible, build it 42 or 48 inches wide. Construct a single-tiered ramp -- one whose entire rise is on a single stringer -- as shown here.
To ease the transition between the pad and the ramp, brush a latex bonding agent on the existing concrete and trowel on a 6- to 8-inch-wide transition strip at the bottom edge of the decking. Next, setting the stringer on the support board and using a piece of scrap, we scribed a line for the angle between the stringer and the block. For the last couple of boards, we drilled through the stringer and into the concrete (using concrete anchors).

This can be done by cutting a piece of mason's cord approximately 2 feet longer than the proposed landing platform.
The cord should intersect the marks you made for the proposed ramp width on each of the first two cords. We recommend using a tubular concrete form (Sonotube), or pour the concrete directly into the holes. The decking material should be screwed down to the joists to prevent the boards from lifting over time.
The corner posts will be used as structural support for the ramp surface as well as the railing post. The landing platform size should be at least as wide as the ramp and a minimum of 60 inches long.A well-constructed ramp will make your home more wheelchair-accessible and greatly enhance the quality of life for those who need it.
To build longer ramps, set posts on footings at equal intervals along both sides of the run.
Thinking back, we should have marked the locations for our ramp stringers beforehand to ensure the lag screws wouldn’t be in the way.
