Before I even started this plane I knew I wanted to try to make a fiberglass instrument panel. I placed an order for the plans for the router table and then went searching for a solution for interfacing the router to the computer. I plan on this being a universal workbench used for everything from building speakers and furniture to waxing skis. If you are looking for a mobile or small-space solution—or you want a secondary work surface to complement an existing bench—consider this idea from Woodsmith: a rolling tool cabinet outfitted with a solid top.
Once I started using handplanes, I decided to shorten the legs on the workbench so that I could plane more easily.
It's made from three layers of 18mm MDF, lipped individually with softwood and biscuits then glued together. Stubchain21st Jun 2008, 01:38 PMWith one of my mdf benches I made it like a kitchen unit, you can't have enough cupboards or storage space in my opinion. I think there are a whole host of problems associated with using mdf as a work bench including what happens if you spill your coffee on it, it's lack of stiffness, strength, etc. The Solsylva plans have a fairly complete list of materials, which I followed with a few exceptions.

This is good because it's difficult to find a place for a mouse that isn't covered in dust. Although 7' is not excessive, if you are going to use MDF, you should be sure to add enough support so that the top doesn't sag over time.
This is my second workbench, but I built similar models for three of my best woodworking friends.
You want to be sure that the center of the bench is rigid as you don't want it to bow when you apply pressure.
Take note that I am not trying to make this bench an aesthetic work of art, just functional and acceptable looking for my wife. I still need to do some sort of trim around the edges to protect the mdf and I am still hoping to somehow make it mobile. The base is made of affordable dimensional lumber, with joints that are both glued and bolted, meaning this bench is not only a thrifty option, but a sturdy one, indeed. The top uses two sheets of laminated MDF, and the plan incorporates handy features like bench dog holes and a woodworking vise. Paul Chapman21st Jun 2008, 07:20 AMI've found that MDF can be used quite successfully for a bench.

All the magazines I have looked at seem to use MDF or Plywood for the benches, I am on a bit of a budget so this will be a good idea.
If you buy any hardware for them now, before you start building the top, then you can plan, measure, and build them along with the top and safe a lot of headache.
I have attached my plans below (which came out too large and rotated to the right - sorry!). I am hoping this will end up being a nice looking bench when I am finished and I doubt that framing lumber will help in that regard.
Once the snow we are getting subsides I will run to the lumber store to get another 2x4 and the plywood and mdf for the top.
