Musical Chairs: Rocking Set of Sound-Generating FurnitureFinally, a chair both children and their grandparents will think is downright cool.
Build Your Own Beautiful Flat-Pack ChairWith a borrowed CNC router, we cut all the pieces for this Eames chair from a single sheet of wood.
Gustav Duesing‘s Chair 23D has an intriguing skeletal shape and a brilliant flat-pack design. This year’s DMY featured many flat-pack, no-glue no-screws designs, but the most intriguing was Gustav Duesing 23D chair made from interlocking pieces of birch plywood.
Follow our plans and you'll have a flat-pack chair that comes together without any of those obnoxious IKEA fasteners.

Packed flat, these pieces are highly portable and of course can be put together surface-by-surface without tools or complex instructions.
They come in a variety of shapes and functions and are stable once converted into their final formation. While these flat-pack furniture designs might not be the height of fashionable design they are certainly cheap, easy and interesting alternatives to standard furniture. First, I flattened the 3D model into individual parts, or profiles, and arranged them on a virtual sheet of plywood. While it’s not always true that making something yourself is greener than buying it ready-made, DIY objects are often easier on the planet than mass-produced, factory-made items.
Everything snaps together like flat-pack furniture, but without the cheesy fasteners—just mechanically sound through tenons and lap joints.
The idea is simple but ingenious: a single piece of plywood is printed with outlines of various colors. The chair is cut from a sheet of 0.7 inch thick birch-plywood, it assembles without the use of glue or screws, and it packs flat to ship, saving on CO2 emissions during transportation.

Swedish designer Pal Rodenius has a fantastically unique idea for helping DIY enthusiasts fill their homes with inexpensive, custom-made, low-waste furniture: a single piece of plywood that can be cut in different ways to form different pieces of furniture. Depending on which furniture piece you want to build, you cut on a specific color of outline: cut on the grey lines for a table and chair, cut on the blue lines for a bedroom suite, and so on. Rodenius decided that the best remedy would be to offer the patterns on a giant sticker that the end user will simply slap onto a piece of plywood for an even greater degree of DIY spirit. Then the pieces fit together easily and you’ve got a whole new set of furniture with minimal drama.
