Southern Dobbs/Dabbs Males Born Pre-1801

The table below comes from a search of the United States Census of 1850. The criteria of the search were for males with the surname Dobbs or Dabbs born before 1801 in the southern Atlantic states (Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, or Georgia).

There were found 37 men with the surname Dobbs and six with the surname Dabbs (one was listed in the index as Dabbe, but an inspection of the image confirmed the name was spelled as Dabbs).

Of the group with the surname Dobbs: ten gave Virginia as their birthplace, ten were from North Carolina, nine from South Carolina, and ten from Georgia.

In 1850, twelve of the Dobbs were living in Georgia, six in Tennessee, five in Alabama, four each in Kentucky and Mississippi, three each in Illinois and Virginia, two resided in North Carolina, and one each in Indiana, South Carolina, and Texas.

Of the men where more than one lived in same locale in 1850: two lived in Macon, Alabama, two in Cass, Georgia, two in Cobb, Georgia, two in Gwinnett, Georgia, three in Allen, Kentucky, and two in Bradley, Tennessee. Five out of the six Dabbs were born in Virginia with one born in North Carolina. One other note: out of the forty-four men found, nine have the first name John and three are named Josiah.
