Geospatial Systems & Apache SIS Integration

Geoscientific datasets are projected on various spheroids, datums, and cartographic projections depending on their geographic domain:

• WGS 84 (EPSG:4326): Standard geographic latitude/longitude coordinates on the WGS 84 ellipsoid.
• Web Mercator (EPSG:3857 / EPSG:900913): Cylindrical projection standard for online mapping.
• Lambert Conformal Conic: Conic conformal projection widely used in regional meteorological forecasting (e.g. AROME, WRF).
• Polar Stereographic: Azimuthal projection suited for polar ocean and sea-ice monitoring.

Apache SIS 1.4 in Capella Datascience

The org.polarsys.capella.datascience.sis plugin integrates the Apache Spatial Information System (SIS) library to provide:

• Geodetic Transformations: Exact coordinate transformations between EPSG codes using mathematical transform pipelines.
• Bounding Box & Envelopes: Calculation of geographic extents and intersections.
• Raster Grid Coverage: Reprojecting regular and irregular curvilinear grids into target display projections.
