Measuring springs can be challenging; most people, even garage door service technicians, often have difficulty measuring torsion springs. Ordering incorrect springs wastes time and cash. If you are not sure if your door had the correct springs, we recommend that you weigh your door using an analog scale. From my own field experience I would approximate that at least 10% of the doors have the inaccurate springs on them. We like to improve the garage door balance. A 3rd option is to figure out the door size and model number. After you gather the necessary information you can order garage door springs.

Leading Prior to beginning on the replacement, it is vital that we start these instructions with our sternest warning: CARE! Changing garage door torsion springs is unsafe because the springs are under tension. You could likewise harm residential or commercial property. We desire your business, but not at the expense of your well being. Getting the job done right is your obligation. If you have any doubts about your capability to securely alter your springs, we suggest you work with an expert to fix your garage door. Safety First! Then work. In spite of my high mechanical ability, even after 18 years in the trade I lost the end of my left forefinger. A few years later on I had five stitches in my best thumb, and a year later five stitches in my left thumb. In 2004 emergency clinic staffs dug steel out of my eye and finished my ring finger with eight stitches. I am not so ignorant regarding think that I have made my last journey to the emergency room. Repairing garage doors, especially replacing torsion springs, threatens work, whether you are a do-it-yourself property owner or a skilled service technician. It is difficult to cover every harmful circumstance you might experience. Pay unique attention to the warnings that appear in red.

ATTENTION! Due to harmful actions below that can result in bodily injury, we recommend that you thoroughly study all the directions below before beginning your work. 2.1 Two essential presumptions will assist you execute this replacement safely. First, assume that the springs are going to break as you loosen up or wind them. Keep clothing and body parts far from the springs. Use safety glasses. 2.2 Second, presume that the cone will slip or blow up as you relax and wind the spring. Keep your head out of the path of the winding cone. Keep your hands far from the cones so that if and when the winding bar slips out of the cone and your hand jerks up, the cone does not rip your flesh or cover your clothing and body parts into the spring. These older Crawford and Mc Kee torsion spring cones were produced 5/8 “bars. Often, nevertheless, the holes are too little for 5/8” bars. Whatever you do, don’t utilize a 1/2 “bar; instead, grind down a 5/8″ bar to fit. I recently had a Mc Kee spring let loose after winding since I utilized a 1/2″ bar when my 5/8” bar would not fit. The only safe way to replace these older springs is to make.
a winding bar for each hole of each cone. 2.4 The exact same is true of Older Overhead, Bar Col and Raynor torsion springs that have winding cones with irregular hole sizes. If you insert a 1/2 “X 18” bar in a few of these holes you can move the opposite end of the bar over 4 inches. I’ve had much of the older cones spin loose from my bars, the last one producing an$ 1800 emergency clinic costs.
If your cones are like any of these, or if they have more than 2″ of play, leave the job of installing torsion springs to a professional garage door mechanic. Some older openers are hardwired and you will need to get rid of a fuse or flip the breaker. 2.6 Disengage the opener from the door. Some garage door openers have a neutral position for the trolley disconnect. On older openers you may need to remove the L-shaped drawbar arm. We do not recommend changing torsion springs with the garage door open. Extending the springs the width of 8 or 9 coils is difficult, and leveling the garage door can also be challenging. Back to Leading Collect the products and tools required for changing the springs safely. In addition to the torsion springs you’ll require a minimum of one or two 10″ vise grips, an adjustable wrench, and two 1/2″ X 18″ winding bars.
