Determining springs can be challenging; most people, even garage door professionals, often have trouble measuring torsion springs. Buying incorrect springs wastes time and cash. If you are uncertain if your door had the correct springs, we recommend that you weigh your door utilizing an analog scale. From my own field experience I would estimate that at least 10% of the doors have the incorrect springs on them. We like to improve the garage door balance. A 3rd option is to identify the door size and model number. After you gather the necessary details you can purchase garage door springs.

Leading Prior to getting begun on the replacement, it is vital that we start these directions with our sternest warning: CAUTION! Replacing garage door torsion springs threatens due to the fact that the springs are under stress. You could also damage residential or commercial property. We want your business, but not at the expenditure of your well being. Doing the task right is your duty. If you have any doubts about your ability to safely change your springs, we advise you work with a professional to fix your garage door. Safety First! Then work. In spite of my high mechanical aptitude, even after 18 years in the trade I lost the end of my left index finger. A few years later I had 5 stitches in my ideal thumb, and a year later 5 stitches in my left thumb. In 2004 emergency clinic personnels dug steel out of my eye and finished my ring finger with eight stitches. I am not so ignorant regarding think that I have made my last journey to the emergency situation room. Repairing garage doors, especially changing torsion springs, is hazardous work, whether you are a diy house owner or a knowledgeable service technician. It is impossible to cover every dangerous scenario you might come across. Pay unique attention to the cautions that appear in red.

ATTENTION! Due to unsafe steps listed below that can result in bodily injury, we suggest that you carefully study all the instructions listed below prior to beginning your work. 2.1 2 essential presumptions will assist you execute this replacement safely. Initially, presume that the springs are going to break as you unwind or wind them. Keep clothes and body parts far from the springs. Wear security glasses. 2.2 Second, assume that the cone will slip or explode as you relax and wind the spring. Keep your go out of the course of the winding cone. Keep your hands away from the cones so that if and when the winding bar slips out of the cone and your hand jerks up, the cone does not rip your flesh or cover your clothing and body parts into the spring. These older Crawford and Mc Kee torsion spring cones were made for 5/8 “bars. Often, however, the holes are too small for 5/8” bars. Whatever you do, do not utilize a 1/2 “bar; instead, grind down a 5/8″ bar to fit. I just recently had a Mc Kee spring let loose after winding because I used a 1/2″ bar when my 5/8” bar wouldn’t fit. The only safe method to replace these older springs is to make.
a winding bar for each hole of each cone. 2.4 The exact same holds true of Older Overhead, Bar Col and Raynor torsion springs that have winding cones with inconsistent hole sizes. If you insert a 1/2 “X 18” bar in a few of these holes you can move the opposite end of the bar over 4 inches. I’ve had many of the older cones spin loose from my bars, the last one generating an$ 1800 emergency clinic expense.
If your cones are like any of these, or if they have more than 2″ of play, leave the task of setting up torsion springs to a professional garage door mechanic. Some older openers are hardwired and you will need to remove a fuse or flip the breaker. 2.6 Disengage the opener from the door. Some garage door openers have a neutral position for the trolley disconnect. On older openers you may need to remove the L-shaped drawbar arm. We do not advise changing torsion springs with the garage door open. Extending the springs the width of 8 or 9 coils is hard, and leveling the garage door can also be challenging. Back to Leading Collect the supplies and tools required for altering the springs safely. In addition to the torsion springs you’ll need a minimum of one or two 10″ vise grips, an adjustable wrench, and 2 1/2″ X 18″ winding bars.
