Every player has a ball and dribbles in one half of the field. On the coaches command they will a) use left foot only, b) right foot only, c) both feet, d) put foot on ball and change balls, e) change direction/dribble in any grid, f) switch make eye contact and pass ball to someone else and g) switcheroo make eye contact and switch balls with someone in opposite box. Stretching exercises between the introduction of each of the instructions/tasks. Activity 1: Square 12 yards by 12, however with enough room to extend in all four directions. Pass and follow A passes to B, B passes to C etc. then change direction so that A passes to D, D passes to C etc. 2) Pass to anyone in the square and follow your pass to their position. 3) A passes to B, B lays off for A and A passes to C. C then lays off for B who passes to D and so on. Start with any amount of touches then limit it to two touches and finally one touch. * Weight of pass * Angle of pass * Use both feet to pass and receive * Eye contact and concentration Activity 2: Place players into two teams in either half of the grid. Team A send 1 player into grid Bs side who attempts to win the ball. Team B strives to get 10 passes, if they get 10 passes then they score 1 point and Team A send in a second player to defend. If the defenders win the ball then they need to pass it back to there team on the other side of the grid and Team B then send in 1 defender to try and win the ball. First team to 10 points wins. * Supporting angles from teammates * Speed of play and decisions * Quality of controlling touch * Communication between players * Disguising the passes you are making Game condition: 8 v 8 free play with the added bonus of making 8 passes also a goal. Encourage keeping possession until there is an opening to penetrate into. Cool Down: Light gentle jog across the field with longer stretches and a discussion regarding the session what have we learnt, when to pass, where to pass etc. Week 1 Day 2 Short, short, long passing Warm up: In groups of 4 and using a half field area, all players pass and move. Players number themselves one to four and pass using only two touches maximum (stretching should be implemented until all players are ready to compete in a competitive manner). The coach will then call out a number and this player will defend and create a 3v1 situation. A goal is scored by the attackers making 5 passes in concession, and by the defender touching the ball. First party to three goals wins, and then the passing and moving continues. Activity 1: Set up three grids side by side (30yards long x 20 yards wide). Inside each of the three grids will be one team of four/five players (dependant on numbers). The coach will play the ball into one of the outside grids. Two players from the central grid will go into that grid and pressure. Players must make at least five short passes and then play a long ball through the central zone to the team at the opposite end to score. At this point both defenders return to the centre and the other two defenders are released. If the defenders gain possession of the ball then they will move to the outside grid while the other team (who lost possession) will move into the central grid and become defenders. * Movement from players NOT in possession of the ball * Angles created by the players to receive the ball * Commit the defenders before playing the pass * Correct decision making, making the correct pass at the right time * Players create space while in possession and choose the correct time to play the ball long Activity 2: Three teams of five players play in a half field area. Goals are scored by making 10 consecutive passes. The coach will name a team to start off as defenders, they will therefore be playing 10 v 5, in a numbers up game. When the defending team win possession back then they become attackers and the team that lost the ball become defenders. * How quickly can we make the transition from defenders to attackers * Shape that is created for the attackers width, depth and length * Are we encouraging the defenders to come short before playing the long ball * Is there good communication between the players, is the player on the ball given the correct instructions Game condition: 8 v 8 game however if one team scores then they CANNOT score again until the opposition have equalized. Therefore they must keep possession of the ball and frustrate their opponents. Incorporating all that has been practiced with the short and long passes. Observe the other players movement in and around the ball. Cool Down: Light jog, stretches and a recap on the session. Week 2 Day 1 Dribbling Warm up: Ball each dribbling around inside 18 yard box. Every few touches must complete a turn or move. Completing the same turn or move twice with both feet or turning in both directions. Then ball between two and each player attempts to score as many points as possible by dribbling the ball onto a cone. Playing 1v1 inside the 18yard box area, have many cones laid out inside the area at least double the amount to players. Incorporate stretching before you have the players competing against each other. Activity 1: 1 v 1 with side players (3v1) 1 v 1 to a goal with goalkeeper, in an area 20 x 10 yards. The players have one and a half minutes to score as many goals as possible. Both players have supporting players in the attacking half. When attacking player receives the ball the defender must be 4 5 yards away unless he is receiving the ball in the attacking half. Change players at the end of one and a half minutes. O 20 Yards X GK X . O GK 10 Yards O X * Use upper body to create fake, change of direction and speed once fake is created * Once you have beaten the defender and have a sight at goal, have a shot *If struggling to pass the defender one on one then use a side player to increase the chance of success Activity 2: 1 v 1 to a small goal with a goalkeeper for each player. Players change with goalkeepers at the end of each match. They can play winners play winners and losers play losers after both players have played outfield. Combine the number of goals scored and the highest scoring partnership move upwards. If it finishes in a tie then they play each other again. Game condition: Player must beat an opposing player before they can pass the ball. Encourage as many 1 v 1 situations as you can. Cool down: Controlled jog across the field with a question and answer session on what the players have learnt from the session. Week 2 Day 2 Speed Dribbling Warm up: Players jog from A to B. when they get to B they accelerate to C and recover on the outside dribbling with their strong foot, weaker foot and both feet. Players then must perform a move when they get to the cone at point B, using the cone as a defender, they also complete the same move on the recovery. Coach then introduces specific moves for the whole group to perform step-over, double step-over, Maradona, L shape etc. Stretches can be completed while waiting in line to complete the dribble and move. XXX .A Jog .B to full pace .C OOO .A .B .C Activity 1: 1 v 1 dribbling, score by a) stopping the ball on the opponents line and b) dribble across the line in full control of the ball. Week 3 Day 1 Turning Warm up: In twos, with one ball, playing small passes about ten yards in distance. Looking for receiving player to check into space from imaginary defender and turning their body through 180 degrees and then attacking the defender. Change positions after each pass. Have players use different ways of receiving and turning to beat their opponent. Stretch players off every couple of minutes then continue with the exercise, emphasizing on element of surprise when receiving and turning. Activity 1: Half of the team on the outside of a circle (feeders), half on the inside (receivers). Players on the outside have the balls. The feeders begin by passing the ball into the receivers feet who turn, using different methods, and then play a pass to another feeder who does not have a ball. The next progression is for the feeder to play the ball from their hands for the receiver to control and turn using either foot, thigh or chest. Change positions after every one and a half minutes. * Have players check away from the ball before receiving * Change receiving method part of body, move performed, speed of receiving * With an array of receiving tricks this will make it harder for the defender to anticipate and intercept. If you use the same move consistently it makes it easier for the defender to read. * Depends on the weight of the pass to which receiving method can be used e.g. if the pass is soft then it would be inappropriate to let the ball run through your legs Activity 2: 2 v 1 to a line. Receiving player with his back to pressure has to receive, turn and go past defender - he scores his point by reaching the end line. Feeder plays as an option to go backwards if player cannot beat the defender, he then looks to play back into the receiving players feet for him to turn and attack the end line. Play in an area 20 yards by 10 yards. 20 Yards X O END X. ZONE 10 Yards * Create space between yourself and the defender by checking back into an old area * Turn through 180 degrees and attack the defender * Receive the ball with the foot furthest away from the defender * Feeder must attempt to play the ball to the receivers safe side, away from the defender Game condition: 4 goal soccer. Coach can change the direction of the attack by changing the goal that the team have to attack. Cool down: Light jog, stretching off holding them longer than in the warm up and a recap on the session with your players. Week 3 Day 2 Playing back to pressure Warm up: With a ball each the players perform turns and moves that could be used to beat an opponent or change direction away from danger. Once the move has been performed a burst of speed is required to accelerate away from the defender Activity 1: In groups of three, one player acts as a defender, the defender marks the first attacker. The second attacker plays a ball into the first attackers feet who plays a ball first time back, at an angle, to the second attacker. The first attacker spins quickly and anticipates a through ball from the second attacker. The ball may be played at any side (therefore the second attacker may make an across the face run to collect or a forward run). Change positions after every couple of shots. * The attacker has a strong receiving posture arm out, possibly side on, aware of where the defender is * Ball is played to the safe side (the side furthest away from the defender) * The pass, from the first attacker, must be played with the correct weight and direction to the second attacker * The first attacker must spin as soon as the ball has been played (therefore taking the defender with them or running into a space behind them) * Communication between the two attackers is essential otherwise the defender may intercept and regain possession Activity 2: 2 v 2 to a goal. Working diagonally opposite each other. Use two full size goals 25 yards from the 20 by 15 yards working area. Have all the group working at the same time and attacking one of the two goals as often as possible. Players A and B are in the same team, players Y and Z are in the same team. Players A and Y pass the ball to each other one touch, when player B checks to receive the ball from player A then players Y and Z can defend. Player Bs choices are to turn and beat player Z, hold the ball up with back to goal or involve player A by returning a pass to them. They then attack the goal that player A was initially facing and player B had their back to. If players A and B lose possession then they become the defenders to Z and Y. Players MUST dribble out through the end area BUT a pass can be made that goes outside the area, into another area or the attacking zone. You require three groups of players with a ball each, facing a goalkeeper in each goal. The first player strikes the ball at the goal then receives their ball back and dribbles towards the next group. It is possible to add players to perform a one-two or overlap etc. The three goals all back onto one another and the players are organized into a triangular kind of shape. Ensure players are stretching off in between shots at goal. XXX XXX X.* *.X GK GK GK * .X XXX Activity 1: Split the team into groups of four. Two teams are servers standing at the side of the goals (6 yard line) and the other two teams are shooting at the goal from 25 yards. The servers will pass to the strikers who have two touches, one to control and the other to shoot. First pass comes from the right then the second pass from the left always alternate the passing. After three to four minutes swop the teams over. To increase the competitive nature of the players make it into a competition where each team is playing against each other to score the most goals, inappropriate passes result in a loss of a goal to that team. To increase the difficulty after playing the pass that player becomes a defender and closes down the attacker to stop them from scoring. Keep changing positions every three to four minutes. Activity 2: 1 v 1 to small goals, in a small game scenario. One player begins as defender, his team then play a pass to the first player in the opposite team, these two then play to goals at either end of the field. Once this game has finished then the attacker (player who was passed the ball) stays in the field as defender to the opposite team and the game continues. Week 5 Day 1 1 v 1 Defending Warm up: Fast feet, using the ladders (cones), organize the group into teams of 4/5. Working on the correct running technique and quickness of feet. Start off by going through the ladders with one foot at a time, two feet, zig zags side steps across the ladders. Finish off with a 5 10 yard sprint at the end of the ladder, then a jog back to the start. In twos, player passes into partners feet and then closes down the space as quickly as possible. Change positions after each pass. Activity 1: 1 v 1 to a line. Defenders job is to stop the attacker from scoring a goal by reaching the end line. The defender can do this by tackling the attacker, forcing him out of bounds or delaying him so that he cannot go forward towards the end line. Play in an area of around 20 yards by 10 yards. The game begins with the defender passing the ball to the attacker. * Close the attacker down quickly and limit the area for the attacker to play in * Make the play predictable by forcing the attacker the way YOU want him to go * Delay the attackers advancement as much as possible to give your team time to recover * Tackle only when your 100 percent sure you will win the challenge or when the attackers too close to your goal and a challenge has to be made Activity 2: 1 v 1 ladder. Each player rotates between defender and attacker. You can only score points when you are the defender. If the defender forces the player out of the grid or makes a challenge and wins the ball then they gain one point, the attackers job is to try and hit the end line he doesnt win a point but he does stop the defender from gaining any more points. Players then change positions and play again. Play for 2 minutes a game. Winners move upwards in the ladder and the losers go downwards, anyone who ties stay and play each other again. Game condition: Pair the teams off with an opposite number, each player has one player that they have to mark. You may only tackle your own man and are not allowed to tackle unless it is your opposite player that has the ball. Encourages man-marking throughout your team. Cool down: Jog, stretch and discussion about the session. Week 8 Day 1 Attacking shape of the team Warm up: Passing the ball in groups of three. Passing and receiving with the same foot, then opposite foot and receive on one foot and pass with the other foot. Always on the move, short and long passes. After every 3 touches complete a turn or move then one more touch to lift your head and then pass to one of the partners. Activity 1: Shadow Play - the left back receives the ball from the goalkeepers distribution, theres no one ahead of him for several yards. His job is to commit the defense. He is far from the goal, so shooting would not appear to be an option. He could run with the ball either along the touchline, or toward the center of the field. Running toward the center of the field does not make much sense given that it would compromise the attacking shape. He would be interfering in the space of his own teammates. In this part of the field, doing so would leave his position open for a counterattack should possession be lost. Dribbling is also risky, in that lost possession in this sector leaves the team with little cover, and the other team would have good attacking territory. The final option would be to pass, leaving our first attacker with two real options, running further to commit the defense, or passing from his current position. He could run with the ball and allow his own team to settle into better positions, while drawing the defense to that area of the field. He could attempt to pass safely, perhaps drawing the defense to that player and freeing himself up to further open the field. The player with the ball must have passing options, teammates to help him. The positions of his teammates are vital for the team to advance forward. The wide midfielders would use the touchline to open up the space, the forwards would create length in the game by drawing the centre backs backwards and the central midfielders would move to a position that enables them to receive the pass BUT doesnt compromise the space of the left back. The attacking defense would offer the left back passing options backwards and to the side if they were requiring to switch the point of attack. (see diagram on next page) (Activity 1) When the ball is thrown from the goalkeeper to the left back. Arrows indicate the runs that are made GK. CB CB RB LB LCM RM RCM LM ATT ATT Activity 2: 11 v 8. Using three quarters of a full field. Goalkeepers on both sides. Numbers up on the attackers side. Looking for the wide midfielders to use the whole width of the field and make the field big. Once the ball is received by the full backs then the wide midfielders push wide, attackers create as much length as possible and the centre midfielders develop space to receive the ball from the full backs. Looking to attack as fast as possible with the numbers up counter attacking style. * Width must be employed by the wide midfielders * Passing options have to be available throughout the team angles, space, communication etc. * Supporting players must look to help the player on the ball attackers on the ball, central midfield, other attacker and a wide player must be supporting Game condition: As soon as the full backs receive the ball then the team try and set up in the positions spoke about in the exercises before. Cool down: Controlled jog across the field with a question and answer session on what the players have learnt from the session Week 8 Day 2 Defensive shape of the team Low pressure Warm up: In pairs, start off by standing 10 yards apart, one ball between the two. Passing the ball two touch then one touch back and forwards with partner. i) Progressing onto one ball each. They are throwing and catching the ball themselves and on the coaches command change, switch, exchange etc., they swop balls with one another. Throwing the ball and catching without dropping the ball between partners. Communication is important so that they dont throw at the same height, time etc. ii) Try and progress onto using there feet so that they can pass the ball between each other. iii) Now we can work together as a team and compete against another team. This time once the balls have been exchanged then the next partnership up can swop balls up until everyone in the team has changed balls with their partner. If the ball is dropped then they start again. Awareness from what is happening to our left and right is vital as is communication and concentration. X1 X2 X3 X4 X5 O1 O2 O3 O4 O5 Activity 1: In teams of four, playing in a grid 40 yards by 30yards. The Xs are defending 3 small goals and the Os are defending 2 small goals the goals are each two yards wide. The Xs are the defending team while the Os are attempting to attack the three small goals. The Xs can score by passing the ball through the goals whereas the Os have to dribble through one of the goals. The Xs will play deep (low pressure) and allow the Os to attack towards the goal. If it becomes to easy for the defending team then adjust the conditions of the game e.g. must dribble the ball through, make the goals smaller that they are passing through etc. The idea is to have a team defense instead of an individual 1 v 1. The team work together to close down the space and limit the options that the attackers may have. The defending team should work on the emphasis of cover, balance and shape. The team shifts along together keeping there shape and minimizing the attacking teams advancement. Lie deep low pressure Team squeezes over together e.g. X X X X X X X X O O O. O O. O O O * Concentration between the defenders, awareness knowing where the ball/opponents/defenders are * Communication knowing when to step towards the ball and when to keep tight together as a unit * Delay, cover, balance and shape of the defenders * Making the right decision of when to attempt and win the ball bad touch, head down, numbers up etc. * Patience. As a unit we must be patient and wait for the chance to intercept. This way it becomes harder to break through our defense. Activity 2: Using three quarters of a full field play 11 v 8. The defensive team will only have 8 players and will be attempting to stop the 11 attacking players from scoring into the full size goals. Free play rules apply (offside, free-kicks etc.). If the defenders win the ball then there job is to deliver/pass the ball back to the coach, who would be in the strikers role in the team. Once the coach receives the ball back from the defenders then the game will restart with the attackers receiving a new ball from the coach. The defenders need to stay together as a team, compact and try to limit the amount of space available for the attackers. If the ball were to be on the left hand wing then the team would squeeze over and leave the right hand side player (wide midfielder) unmarked. Why? Because this player is not dangerous at this moment in time due to the ball being on the opposite side of the field. If the ball is played back towards the middle then we would become more aware and conscious of this player. We need to keep our defending team tight as a unit so that no penetrating balls can be played through us. Game condition: When the defenders have the ball then the team drops deep and defends together behind the ball. Cool down: Controlled jog across the field with longer stretches and a recap on the session Week 9 Day 1 Small sided games Warm up: Relays and fun filled games. Last week so make it enjoyable for the players Activity 1 and 2: Small sided games. 3 v 3 or 4 v 4. Round robin tournament with the winners eventually playing each other. Game condition: Free play game 8 v 8, or whatever the numbers allow. Have one of the top teams from the small sided games team up with one of the weaker teams and make it another competition. Cool down: Jog, stretch and worship the winning team. Week 9 Day 2 Putting it all together Warm up: Juggling. Challenge is on to beat there best effort so far and create a new record for themselves. Able to use any part of the body. Small one touch passes to partner and back. Coach sets a number to complete and its the first pair who can complete them the fastest. Activity 1 and 2: Using all the players to create an 8 v 8, 9 v 9 etc. Limit the teams to specific conditions using the game conditions that have been used over the last eight weeks. How can the teams adapt and cope with the new conditions on the coaches command e.g. eight passes counts as an extra goal, must beat a player before passing, one touch finish only, any goal scored from a cross counts as double etc. Game condition: Free play, let them enjoy themselves. Cool down: Sit down and thank the players for their hard work and commitment. Explain what you are hoping they will achieve from what has been learnt and set them some homework for the next time you may see them.
