What?

Most contemporary online video hosting services (e.g. Microsoft Stream) offer automated methods for generating captions. Most also provide a way to download the captions. Often as WebVTT files, a format designed for other systems, not for people to read or reuse.

This page converts WebVTT files into a format you can read and copy and paste elsewhere. e.g. into a Word document to edit further and share with students.

It attempts to format the text into paragraphs using the simplistic idea that a pause in speaking of just less than a second indicates a new paragraph.

Note: all this work occurs in your web browser. Your content never leaves your computer.

How?

  1. Browse to find the WebVTT file you wish to convert.

A valid WebVTT file will be converted and output displayed below.

  2. Click the Copy transcript button to copy the output to your clipboard.

Ready for you to paste into Word or other destination.
