WiSP Amazons: Holly Budge; Adventurer & Conservationist

Britain’s Holly Budge started off her sporting life while still a toddler when she began riding eventually taking up eventing. when she reached 20 something she discovered skydiving and was soon to move to New Zealand where she learned filming and became the first woman to became the third woman in New Zealand at the time to be a skydiving camerawoman.

In 2008 she took up her next challenge and became the first woman to skydive off Mount Everest. The following year, she took part in the famous Mongol Derby covering 1000 kms in just 9 days. Since then she she has taken on some of the world’s highest peaks and led a successful expedition on the technical Ama Dablam (6812m) in Nepal.

Holly is passionate about sustainability, design and conservation and has a Masters in Sustainable Design. She is currently combining a campaign with an exhibition entitled ‘How Many Elephants’ which presents a physical commentary on the devastating impacts of the elephant ivory trade. 96 elephants are poached every day which at that rate, would make them extinct by 2025.

She shares evidence of the effects that computer screens are having on young children and bases her recommendations for changing these habits on actual experiences explaining why limiting time is critical to development. The results of scientific studies show that children below the age of two should be limited to no more than 30 mins a day in front of a screen and why more exposure can lead to mental health issues. This is another critically important conversation with valuable advice and a wake-up call to us all on how we help maintain our mental health and crucially help others.

Athlete Profile: Hayley Nixon - Canoe Ocean Racing

South African Hayley Nixon became the 2017 ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Champion in Hong Kong this fall having already won the ICF World Cup Nelo Summer Challenge. In 2016 she made her mark in the sport by becoming the World Surfski Series Champion. Since the world championships Hayley won the Palm2Pines race in Sydney. And her next race is the 56 kilometer Cape Point Challenge canoe ocean racing event in Cape Town to finish the year. Before taking up Surfski Hayley was a rower and campaigned for the 2012 London Olympic Games.

Elizabeth Emery talks to fabled French-American cyclist Marion Clignet, and Anna Maria Wolf who founded the women’s cycling blog Pretty. Damned. Fast, and owns the commuting-focused bike shop Sun & Air in Brooklyn, NY.

Marion Clignet’s illustrious career is filled with amazing accomplishments: she was 10 time French national Champion, 6 time World Champion, twice Olympic silver medalist, and has over 250 victories, including stage wins in the Tour de France. This is even more amazing because, at age 22, she discovered that she has epilepsy. She organizes a Fund Ride to build a gym at a school for kids with epilepsy near her home in France. She started racing because of epilepsy and is now determined to help kids and their families realize that sport will play a major role in building confidence socially and physically and help them even lower their seizure threshold.

Anna Maria Wolf talks about her entry into cycling when she was in her 30s. Her background is in fashion and in creating amazing images, which she brought to cycling in her blog Pretty Damned Fast with the sub-heading: Women's cycling in all of its forms, especially when it's done with style. Anna Maria shares her path to cycling and owning the shop plus encouraging women to get on their bikes and ride.

Belgium's Sofie Gierts opens up about her tumultuous career in this exclusive interview with Ash Nelson about how it felt to not be selected for the London Olympic Games even though she contributed with three of the four goals in a qualifying game when the Red Panthers beat Ireland. She also reveals how the team's admin treated her and the effect it had on her personally and professionally. Sofie also explains that the lack of opportunities in Belgium led her to playing in neighbouring Holland, one of the sport's leading nations, and how this impacted her career. Now retired she has become a coach becasue giving back to the sport is important to her despite the way she way treated.

Athlete Profile: Seun Adigun, Bobsled

Chris Stafford's guest is former track and field Seun Adigun who has already established herself as a hurdler when she competed at the 2012 Olympic Games. Sport has been her life since a child she played everything she could growing up in Chicago from flag football to tennis. She was an avid basketball player as well as track and field athlete in high school. She is a three-time Nigerian National Champion and a two-time African Continental Champion and holds a Masters Degree in Physical Education. Seun’s focus has shifted now from the athletics track to the bobsled run and has her sights set on the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeonchang. Her team of Ngozi [UNGARZI] Onwumere and Akuoma [OKARMA] Omeoga is set to become the first Nigerian women’s Bobsled team having qualified for the games. Seun started a fund raising campaign and estimates their Olympic goal is going to cost them $150,000 but it’s a gift she wants to give to her native country.

Former Canadian Rugby Player Kim Donaldson returns with a new series of Ruck On as the rugby season gets under way. On this episode Kim is joined by fellow Canadian Ashley Steacy to talk about the growth of the women's game in universities and how that is benefiting the sport in general. Ashley was three time Canadian Inter University Sport Champion and was Player of the Year twice her first cap for both 15s and sevens was in 2007. After which she went to three World Cups, one 15’s World Cup where I had the opportunity to play with her. In 2009, 2013 went to those respective Sevens World Cups and keynoted to 2013 with his silver medal actually was announced to the 2014, 2015 women's sevens World Series dream team and rugby Canada's Sevens Player of the Year for 2014. 2015 on home soil won gold in the Pan Am Games and in 2016 representing Canada in their first appearance at the first ever rugby sevens in the Olympics in Rio.

Gabbi Hall focuses on the U.S. races this week as the women’s World Cup heads to Killington, Vermont, as the ladies of the U.S. Ski Team are preparing to put on a show for the home crowd. On this week’s episode, Gabbi caught up with World Cup veteran Resi Stiegler who has been around the block once or twice. In fact, she’s been on and off the World Cup tour for about 15 years. Injuries along the way have not stopped her unique sparkle on the race slope as she prepares for what she hopes will be her third Winter Olympic Games. Gabbi also shares some of the latest headlines in women’s ski racing, including an update from U.S. Olympic gold medalist Julia Mancuso, who also has her eye on Pyeongchang but has yet to start in a World Cup race following hip surgery. We will hear when fans can expect to see her push out of the start gate.

Catherine Haddad-Staller rode Rowan Riley’s 11 year old mare Semper Fidelis to claim their first CDI3* Grand Prix Special win together in Europe this summer. This break out performance for the mare in Le Man, France came just a month after the partnership made their Big Tour debut and Catherine is excited about the horse's future. Catherine was previously based in Germany but now resides in Califon, New Jersey in the summer and Loxahatchee, Florida for the winter season. She has been sponsored by Rowan O’Riley for just over two years but only started riding Semper Fidelis (Sir Donnerhall x Welt Hit II) last year. Chris caught up with Catherine to learn more about this partnership and hear about the rest of her training program. The purpose is to educate and help people so that they have better understanding and the tools to cope with a variety of situations to enable them to stay mentallyfit. Kendra was diagnosed with a Severe Anxiety Disorder, Severe Panic Attacks, Depression and Agoraphobia at a critical time in her career and was forced to leave the sport's national program and put her health first. She has since established a website as a community and resource and spends time carrying out motivational speaking engagements and assisting organizations. On this first episode Kendra addresses the anxieties that manifest during the holiday season - how to better prepare and cope. Bek is a 6 time Iron Distance Champion and has the 6th fastest time in Iron distance history. The couple are lifelong animal lovers and recently started Believe Ranch & Rescue to save horses and dogs; to rehab and re-house them. On their new show, as well as coaching tips and news of Team Sirius and their athletes, they will share stories of the animals they rescue plus updates of Siri's motivational speaking program, and much more. Cat was the Leading Lady Rider, won the 10,000 Leading U25 Award, as well as the FEI 1.45 class with her 11 year old gelding Bokai who also won a CSI 5 star class in Dinard in France this year. In 2009, Laura and her partner Russ founded The Path Less Pedaled, when they sold everything to travel by bike. Caren Hartley founded award-winning Hartley Cycles as the only female UK bike builder and is still one of the few. One of her primary interests is making bikes that fit all people – short and tall. They discussed her transition from fine art to making something functional, being a business woman, the appeal of 650 wheels, and of course, building bikes.

Courtney Dauwalter: Ultra Runner

Ultra runner Courtney Dauwalter recently won the Moab 240 Mile Endurance Run outright by more than 10 hours. The Colorado resident grew up in Minnesota where she competed on the cross-country, track and Nordic-ski teams at her high school - she was an All American for Nordic - and went on to race for the Division I Nordic team at the University of Denver. She has been trail racing for six years now but it was just last year that she captured the attention of the sport with wins at Colorado’s Run Rabbit Run 100 and Arizona’s Javelina Jundred 100K (overall), where she broke both the women’s course record and the overall course record. Four months later in February this year, she set a new American women’s 24-hour record at the Riverbank One Day 24-Hour race in California, running 155.4 miles. The Moab 240 involves anywhere from three to five days on course and traces a giant, single loop of 240-miles with 29,467 feet of elevation gain and descent through the canyons and mountains of eastern Utah. Kendra Fisher: Mentally Fit

Kendra Fisher is a Canadian ice hockey goalie and inline hockey player although her story today is not so much about her successes as a professional athlete as the mental illness that changed the course of her career. As a young player she achieved considerable success and was at the point of trying out for the Canadian team when the physical symptoms stopped her in her tracks. She was eventually diagnosed with a Severe Anxiety Disorder, Severe Panic Attacks, Depression and Agoraphobia which were to change her forever. She was forced to leave the national program and put her health first, which took years of treatment and adjustment to learn to live with her mental illness. Kendra has reached a point where she has the tools to manage her conditions and is in a position to help others through motivational speaking and her website Mentally Fit. Canadian rowers Lindsay Jennerich and Patricia Obee won the silver medal in the Lightweight Pairs at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, after which they decided to hang up their oars. With over 20 years in the sport Lindsay explains why she was ready to retire. She was an alternate for Beijing 2008, and competed in London 2012 as well as Rio. The pair have stood on two world championship podiums, winning silver in 2011 and 2014 in addition to Lindsay’s gold in 2010 with Tracy Cameron. Patricia’s move into the double came on the heels of her bronze medal in the lightweight single sculls at the 2011 U23 World Championships. After competing in the lightweight single sculls in 2013, Obee re-teamed with Jennerich in 2014 to win their first World Cup medal together, bronze in Lucerne. Lissa withdrew before the show jumping phase at Badminton Horse Trials this spring to save her partner Malin Head Clover (Ali G) for another day, and not least of all because she was extremely ill during the event. Lissa is of course the daughter of David & Lucinda Green who have both competed at Burghley, but Lissa, who describes herself as born to ride and bred to event, has her own point to prove. Lisa Blair Sails Solo Around Antarctica

Lisa Blair, 32, became the first woman to sail solo around the Antartica when she completed her 184-day journey on July 25th in Albany, Western Australia. She had attempted to break Russian adventurer Fedor Konyukhov's 2008 record for the fastest solo, unassisted and non-stop trip but her yacht, Climate Action Now, dismasted during the night of the April 4th after 72 days at sea. Lisa was was forced to sail under jury rig to Cape Town where she spent two months while the boat was being repaired. It was a tough mental challenge for the Queenslander but after some moments of reflection she was determined to finish. She now has her sights set on more sailing adventures, such as competing in the Vendee Globe and Volvo Ocean Race, and circumnavigating the Arctic. Former U.S. Team cyclists Elizabeth Emery talks to three amazing women cyclists who are from different disciplines, each with unique skills and covering a wide range of what cycling is all about — which is the focus for this new monthly show Off The Front.

Emma Pooley is a former road cyclist and now multi-sport athlete. While road racing, she won 9 Olympic, World, and Commonwealth Games medals, 6 World Cups, and the 2010 Time Trial World Championship. She now focuses on what she loves and is inspired by —racing in the mountains. They discuss the transition from road cycling on a team to the independent life of individual sports, working with sponsors, coaching and training; her future fame and fortune in Pocket Porridge along with lots of other great stuff, including the UCI and improving women’s cycling.

This month’s Training Tip comes from coach Alison Dunlap, who is one of Elizabeth's absolute favorite riders from when they raced together. Alison competed in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics road race, then switched to mountain biking in 1997. That year she won a World Cup and went on to great success in that sport. She is 2001 Mountain Bike World Champion, 13x National Champion, 2x Olympian, and now proud mom to 6 1/2 yr old son Emmett! She offers a really important tip useful for on the bike, in other sports, and in daily life.

Recently, Elizabeth discovered writer and publisher Elly Blue through her Kickstarter campaign for the upcoming 14th issue of her feminist cycling zine, Taking the Lane. In 2015 she merged her little publishing operation with Microcosm Publishing in Portland, Oregon, where she is now co-owner and marketing director.

Growing up in a horse oriented family she was inspired at an early age to make a career in the sport and made the best of training with a U.S. team rider in Buck Davidson. She remains level-headed about her ambitions by not wishing to start her own business too soon instead focusing on learning every aspect of being a successful rider. Her goal is to make the U.S. team and she has a great string of horses to help her on her journey. Chris Stafford talks to renown coach and trainer Katie Prudent about the current state of show jumping in the USA. For more than two decades, Katie was one of the sport's most successful riders.In the first-ever FEI World Cup Final, in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1979, she finished second, and went on to ride in five more finals in the 1980s. She dominated that decade and was selected to the 1980 U.S. Olympic team but was denied the chance to compete because of the U.S. boycott.Katie was a member of the gold medal winning team at the 1986 World Championships inn Aachen. She was named the American Grandprix Association Rider of the Year three times and awarded the Whitney Stone Cup for her superior record in international competition. For many years Katie has been a sought after trainer who tells it like it is. With her strong foundation in horsemanship she now laments how the sport has changed in the US and why the future looks bleak for the US Team. British record breaking yachtswoman Dee Caffari has become the first female skipper for the 207-18 edition of the Volvo Ocean Race. The 44 year old will lead a 50-50 mixed gender crew with the emphasis on youth while campaigning for a cause that she is passionate about to Turn the Tide on Plastic. This will be a highlight in her career—her sixth round the world trip— in which she has already sailed solo non-stop in both directions breaking records for women in the process. Dee made her debut in the Volvo Ocean Race in the 2014-15 edition with the all-female crew of Team SCA that won the Lisbon - Le Havre leg as well as heading the fleet twice during in-port race and finishing third in the in-port series. Dee will now be breaking new records while making history for women in sailing and Chris Stafford caught up with her just after the announcement was made. Chris Stafford talks to British born show jumper Amanda Derbyshire who arrived Stateside as a 21 year old on the brink of her international career eager to explore America while experiencing the different show scene and what opportunities there might be for her here. Her upbringing in the north of England had given her a solid foundation of horsemanship through Pony Club and having the opportunity to work with Nick Skelton and Laura Kraut opened the door to riding good horses—including Big Star at his first show. For the past seven years from starting out with Andre Dignelli at Heritage Farm in New York learning all about the equitation and hunter jumper worlds, she moved to Becky & David Gochman’s Baxter Hill Farm where she is now the manager and trainer. Amanda currently has four horses at four star level and has been on top form since the winter season in Florida. Returning to Devon Horse Show recently this for the seventh time she was crowned Open Jumper Champion after she won two major classes. Amanda is ambitious about where her career might take her and hopes to earn herself a place on the British team. Chris caught up with her at the Upperville Horse Show this past weekend and asked her about the pros and cons of being based in the U.S.

Catherine (Cat) Chamberlain, 22, from Temecula, CA has enjoyed a highly successful start to her professional career as a dressage rider and trainer winning medals throughout Junior and Young Rider ranks. However, since the age of 12, she has suffered from depression and an eating disorder before eventually seeking help and she is now enjoying life to its fullest. But her story will resonate with others who have faced similar challenges and she is eager to share how she dealt with the issues that plagued her and undermined her during those formative years. Catherine has competed at the FEI North American Junior & Young Rider Championships five times, bringing home two individual gold medals, three team gold medals and three individual silver medals. She is the 2015 U.S. Young Rider National Champion and represented her country at the Hagen CDIO-Y Nations Cup in Germany in 2015. Catherine competed in the Small Tour division in 2016 during her first season as a professional, winning her first CDI I1 and I1 Freestyle. Catherine's future goals include competing her young mare Sophina in the Under 25 Grand Prix division in 2018 before transitioning to the senior Grand Prix. Chris Stafford talks to Lizzie Carr who, at the age of 25, was diagnosed with stage 2 Thyroid cancer that not only turned her world upside down it also made her question her purpose in life and redefined her priorities. She determined that once her treatment was completed and she regained her strength she would put aside her corporate career and embark on a mission she decided would be not only more fulfilling but change the course of her life. So Lizzie took up paddle boarding as a low impact way of regaining strength and fitness after her diagnosis. She then combined it with a national campaign to rid Britain’s waterways of plastic pollution and became the first woman to paddle 400 miles of Britain’s inland waterways on her plastic patrol collecting water samples and trash. This year she became the first woman to paddle board the English Channel solo… that’s 24 miles from Dunganess to Boulogne in 7 hrs while also on plastic patrol. Both of these adventures challenged her physical and mental endurance and now in remission Lizzie has become a woman on an important environmental mission. This week on WiSP IronWomen Sara Gross and Alyssa Godesky are joined by Olympian and former 70.3 World Champion Joanna Zeiger. Joanna finished 4th at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games and was the 2008 Ironman 70.3 World Champion. She is also a 2x Ironman Champion and 15x 70.3 Champion...and these are just some of her accomplishments. The talented Joanna also holds a PhD in Genetic Epidemiology from John Hopkins University. She is a researcher and coach and is on the board of directors for TriEqual, a non-profit organization that encourages diversity and equal opportunity in triathlon. Most recently, Joanna has turned her attention to the mental side of sports performance and she shares stories from the careers of successful elite athletes combined with thorough research in “The Champion Mindset: An Athlete’s Guide to Mental Toughness”.
