Adam Friday Woods (Woody) is a professional speaker and author of the brand new children’s book, Conquer Your Dragons.

Conquer Your Dragons is not only a fun, entertaining, rhyming, adventure story with incredible pictures and great vocabulary, but also a fantastic fable with many underlying principles to teach our children (and perhaps even adults) to recognize that the dragons they face do not have to control them. It gives them hope that they can conquer any obstacle that gets in their way. And it makes a great opportunity for parents to have an open discussion about the challenges their kids have.

In this interview we talk about the book, some of Woody’s dragons and how you can conquer your Dragons!

In our conversation we discuss:

Why he decided to do this tour and make the documentary
The biggest thing he learned from this experience
How to live YOUR dream
His experience growing up on the Texas / Mexico border
How to find your calling in life even if you don't have a “passion”
How necessity helped David find his passion
And how what you think are your disadvantages can actually be your biggest advantages

My favorite quote from our conversation:

“Positivity is aggressive! positivity is running uphill with a backpack on saying I am not going to stop until I reach the top. It is very easy to go with the flow and throw in the towel; but it takes a man or woman with character and fortitude to say “I am committed, I am in it to win it, I am not going to let up until it’s done! And that is positivity!” ~ David Edward Garcia

David’s professional Bio:

David is the only 5-language-speaking-motivational-comedian on the planet! David empathizes with diverse students who face challenges because he was once considered an "at-risk student" himself before defying the odds and graduating with a bachelor's degree and then earning his Master’s Degree. He has motivated children and mature adults in some of the greatest metropolitan cities of the world: Los Angeles, New York, Sao Paulo, Paris, and London.

His upbringing facilitated his multi-culturalism/ multi-lingualism which make it easy to relate to diverse audiences. While his native languages are English, and Spanish, David's has also presented in French, and Portuguese in his international tours. (He also speaks Italian, bringing his language total to five—for now.) He was voted North America’s #1 Youth Motivational Comedian by Top Youth Speakers of America in 2013. After he is done speaking, you won’t know if he’s a comedian with an amazing message, or the most hilarious speaker you have ever heard.

My guest on the season finale of the “Focus On The Good” podcast is my long time friend and mentor Brooks Gibbs. Brooks is the author of “Love is Greater Than Hate” and is the nations leading expert on bullying prevention and building resilience. In this episode we get into some absolutely fascinating stuff.

In this episode we talk about:

How you can build more resilience

The difference between the way Teddy Roosevelt we used the word “bully” and the way we use it now

The history of the saying “sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me”

As a lifelong baseball fan this was one of my favorite interviews of season one of the podcast.

This heartwarming and unforgettable Disney blockbuster about chasing your dreams and keeping your promises, was nominated for a Critics Choice Award, won an ESPY for “Sports Film of the Year.” and Sports Illustrated magazine voted The Rookie one of the “five greatest baseball films ever made.”

Originally drafted in the 1st round in 1984, Jim Morris’s dream was to become a major league baseball player, but his career was derailed by a series of debilitating arm injuries before he got out of the minors in 1988. Instead, Jim got married, raised a family and got his college degree before becoming a high school science teacher and baseball coach in West Texas.
Eleven years after retiring from minor league baseball, Jim Morris was giving a speech to his high school team about the importance of dreams and hard work when his high school players challenged him to pursue his own dream of pitching in the major leagues. Jim Morris made the bet with his high school team: if they won the District Championship, he would tryout for the majors.

Jim Morris’s team fulfilled their end of the bargain, which committed him to a big league tryout. Inspired by his family and students, Jim immediately signed a professional baseball contract. His rise from obscurity became the feel-good story of 1999. After pitching for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2000, Jim Morris signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers and retired from baseball in 2001.

Dallas was one of my childhood heroes and has completely changed my life as an adult through his DDPYOGA program. I have lost 50 lbs. since starting the program and I feel amazing. DDP has an extremely inspiring story that you are going to love. in the episode we discuss his late start at 35 into the world of

Playing For Change is a movement created to inspire and connect the world through music. The idea for this project came from a common belief that music has the power to break down boundaries and overcome distances between people.

Playing For Change was born in 2002 as a shared vision between co-founders,Mark Johnson and Whitney Kroenke, to hit the streets of America with a mobile recording studio and cameras in search of inspiration and the heartbeat of the people. This musical journey resulted in the award-winning documentary, “A Cinematic Discovery of Street Musicians.”

In 2005, Mark Johnson was walking in Santa Monica, California, when he heard the voice of Roger Ridley singing “Stand By Me.” Roger had so much soul and conviction in his voice, and Mark approached him about performing “Stand By Me” as a Song Around the World. Roger agreed, and when Mark returned with recording equipment and cameras he asked Roger, “With a voice like yours, why are you singing on the streets?” Roger replied, “Man I’m in the Joy business, I come out to be with the people.” Ever since that day the Playing For Change crew has traveled the world recording and filming musicians, creating Songs Around the World, and building a global family.

Creating Songs Around the World inspired us to unite many of the greatest musicians we met throughout our journey in the creation of the Playing For Change Band. These musicians come from many different countries and cultures, but through music they speak the same language. The PFC Band is now touring the world and spreading the message of love and hope to audiences everywhere.

The true measure of any movement is what it gives back to the people. We therefore created the Playing For Change Foundation, a separate 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to building music and art schools for children around the world, and creating hope and inspiration for the future of our planet.

This week’s guest is the co creator of "Playing For Change” Mark Johnson.

Our guest today has one of the craziest journeys and mix of talents you will ever find. In the eight years after college, Joe Fingerhut lived, worked, and traveled in 30 countries on 6 continents. He got married in Japan, and returned home to St. Louis, Missouri, and began, from scratch, a career in entertainment and speaking. Joe became a wedding DJ for the largest DJ company in North America, and was named National DJ of the Year in 2011. He also began teaching and performing magic and juggling, which expanded to skills such as stilt-walking, stilt-JUMPING, unicycling, and hypnosis. Wanting to have an impact instead of just entertaining, Joe began speaking to students on setting goals and following their dreams. Today, Joe is a sought after speaker at schools and conferences across the country and around the world. Besides audiences as big as 3,000 people in America, Joe has spoken in Malaysia and Japan (in Japanese!). His first book was just released, called "Permission to Play," and now, besides being an entertainer, speaker, traveller, and DAD, he can now add 'author' to the list. Get ready to discover a world of opportunity with our guest, Joe Fingerhut!
In this episode we discuss:
The process behind writing a book
The importance of coaching
The importance of enjoying your life
Why you should give yourself “Permission to Play”
"When you can make no distinction between work and play you have achieved true mastery in life!”
How to work towards your greater purpose
How to break through your common excuses
You should replace "I can't" with "how can I?"
Why you need to take care of yourself first before you can help others
