wb1haiannapolis: And it appears if one hits the enter or "carriage return it transmits - I am new to this... so I am trying to find out how one gets "connected" with a DVPDONGLE and a Windows 10 (64bit) Dell XPS 8700? I have connectivity (appears this is character limited)

N9KO: w1jts - I use the original DvDongle. Put a check in that box, then when you click on the PTT and it stays engaged until you click on it a second time to "unkey"

jon w1jts: n9ko i have the box checked and no response, could it be a defective dongle and how would you check it? i have the local guru working on the problem and he is no that familiar with the dv 2.1 program i confess i am stumped , everything works except the PT

N9KO: w1jts - there is a good YahooGroup called DvDongle that addresses your dongle and the older blue dongle. Did you follow the installation steps listed on www.dv3kdongle.com ?

W6KD: DVAPTool is the commercial software made for the DVAP and DVDongle devices--it only works to connect to DPlus nodes, which makes it of very limited use in the modern digital radio world

k6jm: KB5ZZB: Many would suggest replacing ICOM G3 gateway software with G4KLX ircDDBGateway, which of course supports XRF/DCS/REF. Also available is g2_link from FREE*Star. It now supports G3 & supports linking to XRF & DCS, but uses slightly different syntax.

k6jm: Sorry for timing out about BlueDV. Works great with DVMega/BlueStack and a D-Star or DMR HT. It now also supports a ThumbDV or equivalent AMBE3000 device, either plugged into pc, or phone/tablet with OTG cable, OR on a network-available AMBE server.

k6jm: I have installed g2_link on G2 gateway. I understand they have updated it to also work with G3 gateways but kept the name the same. My own gateway, W6CX, also runs a hybrid G3/ircDDBGateway built for us by Adrian, VK4TUX. It works really well too.

k6jm: Regarding terminals and using suffix letter -- there really are no rules, other some software only recognizes blank and A-E. It's easier to use blank unless you plan to have two radios with the same callsign in use on the network at the same time.

k6jm: If you have inadvertently somehow rebroadcast traffic onto an REF reflector, you can check if they have banned you. Go to dstar.info/query.html. Look if your callsign's blacklist flag is true. Fix the problem and contact Robin AA4RC.

ka2y: Two hotspots - both on 70 cm - on XLX313 dashboard I see my DStar hotspot on XRF002A - but were does my DNR Hotspot show up?

W6KD: DNR? Do Not Resuscitate? :-)

K6KD: KA2Y - you show up on XLX313 in the Repeaters/Nodes tab. The Users/Modules tab shows your last call, whether it be D-STAR or DMR.

k6jm: UDP used by DV modes over the internet: promises best effort to deliver, but no guarantee (versus TCP's error correction. UDP is used when speed is more important than any one packet getting there. Bob just did a great description of what that means to us.

KF4UCE: It's fairly easy to stand-up a basic computer capable of financial and/or sensitive transactions using a Raspberry Pi or any other number of Small Board Computers that use processors not affected by this exploit.

k6jm: I wonder if the Microsoft suggested fix that slows the processor down significantly could be something that users could turn on, run their banking apps, for example, then turn off and do their ham and other apps....

KF4UCE: Running a live session disk or USB drive, to the best of my knowledge, does not circumvent the vulnerabilities that this exploit exposes since it targets the CPU while it's in operation.

k6jm: Again, if no malware is in memory, there is no vulnerability. So the focus should be there also, at least until a new generation of hardware and compatible software becomes available.

k7exj: K7EXJ Just in case I don't make the Thursday night net, I promised to check my XYL's Nissan Leaf - an all electric car - for RFI last Thursday on the net. On 10110 S4 going slow and S6 at 70mph. In "park" noise went to s1 even though the motor was running.

k7exj: K7EXJ - Temp 32F, heater on, fans on, headlights on, seat heater on, steering wheel heater on. Clearly it's the "motor" as in "park" with all running RFI dropped to S1. As soon as I shifted into "Drive" noise came back. More noise the faster.

K6KD: TH-D74 User Guide describes it starting on p. 35. Pretty sure the manual can be downloaded from Kenwood site - if not US, try UK.

k6jm: wd6fox - I'm not DR mode expert, but I do use it. Kenwood included all DR mode functionality on their D74. I recommend making sure your radio's repeater lists are up to date. See www.dstarinfo.com/RepeaterDownloads.aspx.

k6jm: Also for DR mode, be sure to manually add other reflectors (like XRF002A!). When travelling, I use DR mode on my 51A with a DVMega & BlueStack talking to BlueDV on my phone. After adding various XRF reflectors, I really like DR mode.

VE7LEE: I drove the Chevy Bolt EV car today, with a FT1D, no RFI to the radio, was told that strong RF signals could block the UHF signal from the key fob to car.

VE7LEE: most people did not know what RFI was at the dealers. On other nets, owners of the GM Chevy Volt, had no problems with HF, VHF and UHF radio gear.

k6jm: Bob W6KD -- yeah, but what do you really think about callsign routing? (Actually, nice job on explaining the issues.)

k6jm: I like Bob's wish that gateways would allow Admins to prevent a callsign routed call to be received when the gateway is linked to a reflector. Possibly it could be flipped so that turning on Callsign Routing Reception would unlink and disallow linking.

k6jm: In the meantime, education is needed. If you callsign route, be sure to announce you are doing so and remind listeners that to respond, they need to hit their radio's callsign capture button AND unlink their gateway from any possible reflector. Education!

k6jm: CCS7 is a simpler form of callsign routing, since recipients do not need to hit the callsign capture button. As pointed out on the net, CCS7 uses linking technology (sets up a temporary DCS reflector and links both parties to that during the call).

k6jm: G4KLX is supposed to unlink when receiving a CCS7 call, which would fix many problems, though many would not appreciate unlinking just because of a random CCS7 call into their gateway. As well, the unlink sometimes is not done, so be careful with CCS7 too.

k6jm: Final comment -- I like the 4100 and think it's a good value without even considering using Terminal mode or AccessPoint mode. It may well be my next mobile radio.

w6oso: Regarding the ZUM USB stick, I just got word that this product is a ZUM board with USB connector. It works like the DV4 Mini as it plugs into your PC and it is used like a dongle. There is no production at this time but there are a few pre-production

n9ko-calvin: I just had a QSO using the PA7LIM AMBEserver / ThumbDV as mentioned on the last roundtable. The other operator mentioned someone else's callsign appeared on his radio. I went to the REF001 dashboard and saw his callsign as transmitting, but I did not see

KK6MYS: I think this may be the cheapest multimode hotspot setup. ZumSPOT Pi with Antenna, Raspberry Pi Zero Wireless, 4GB sd card loaded with Pi-Star, 40 pin male connector for Pi (The GPIO Connector for the Pi requires soldering) $120 shipped. 3 week wait.

W6KD: I've tried using a dummy load as a low-power antenna with a hotspot, and did not have much luck with it. I use Diamond SRHF10 rubber ducks on my dvMega hotspots and those work well, as well as the rigid stubby antennas included with the DVAPs

k6jm: US Trust booted Scott because the then D-Star community demanded more stability after he crashed the D-Star network big time. US Trust brought that reliability. Is that needed now? I really don't think so. So we end up being in agreement....

k6jm: Regarding D-Star cubestat and recommendations from N5WD. I like the TS-2000 idea, having used it on D-Star already. My concern is D-Star is far more picky about being exactly on frequency. I am guessing a computer controlled VFO is the way to go.

k6jm: Mike - agree on long trips, mobile hotspots are better. With just a radio, though, and you stop in an area with a D-Star repeater, DR mode with GPS very quickly will get you on the right frequency and on that repeater. But driving, hotspots are better.

k6jm: John - now that BlueDV is available, it appears WinDV users are beginning to migrate to BlueDV. It supports not only DVMega on a BlueStack, but also a ThumbDV from NW Digital. Note BlueDV can access all 26 modules on an XRF reflector.

k6jm: Last June I posted a brief blog article about the DVMega with Bluestack using BlueDV. www.k6jm.com/wp/multi-mode-dvmega-access-point/ - Great graphical interface, and as Bob W6KD points out, MultiMode.

k6jm: Mike - I don't think of lower power access points as being in competition with higher-powered garage repeaters or mountaintop repeaters, they just fulfill different needs. Repeaters still reach a lot of hams, whether in their shacks or mobile.

g0nmy: Enjoying the roundtable guys. As for Callsign Ident, saying your callsign on digital radio only identifies you to other digital users. However if your digital transmissions are causing interference to other analogue RF users. There is no ID.

k6jm: Regarding non-Ham DV modes like DMR and P25, another impetus comes from people who uses these modes at work and want to use them also in Ham Radio. I think early DMR growth came from Moto techs. Same now for P25. MultiMode allows them to have reflectors

g0nmy: Hence the need for a Morse ID or analogue voice ID.

k6jm: Part 97 allows RTTY and other digital modes to id without cw or analog, as long as the digital emission type is public. That is true of D-Star, since callsign is in the header and not encrypted by AMBE.

VK4TUX_Adrian: John, Just regarding callinghome.php in webroot; Dashboard folder files contents can be moved to webroot without deleting this file if you use correct procedure , i.e cp -r instead of mv. So that is not an issue here, and the webroot/php user is the same.

VK4TUX_Adrian: So no issue here with that method, there are many possible options of course, as well as running low cpu usage ver ambed as part of the xlxd service.

K6KD: Adrian - No issue. I know there are many ways of avoiding wiping out the callinghome.php. To me creating a directory /callhome is simple and foolproof.

VE5XEF: The software for thr DV4Mini control panel has a serious flaw, the XREF.IP text file as of version 177, appears to be the exact same as the first versions, totally ignoring reflector ip address changes. Which may be the reason so few DV4Mini's are heard.

K6KD: Also, the variation in latency, sometimes called jitter, is a major factor leading to poor reception. Impacted by internet path to a station and ability of the station software to buffer/smooth out jitter - why stations hear same transmission differently.

k6jm: Tokyo Hamfest link mentions a new ICOM HT ID-31APlus. Looking at a Google translation about this new radio, I see: "Access point mode & Terminal mode compatible". So this new radio joins the 51APlus2 and the mobile 4100 in supporting these features.

k6jm: Keep in mind the Access Point and Terminal modes currently only support Callsign Routing connections, and do not support linking, even to REF reflectors. Buyers of the new radios who hope the new features will support linking should be aware.

quadnet2: There's still a place for the IC4100 for routing. For example you can build routes to reflectors using a starnet routing server.

K6KD: Display name can be changed. Profile at top, then Edit Profile button on right, then Personal tab. Only changes display name, not login. Can also use to make call sign upper case.

N9KO: Thursday Night Topic - It would be nice to hear about how DStar was used in the Hurricane Harvey tragedy. I would think its internet connectivity would limit its use.

wb5eku: Possible Topic: What frequency to put your hotspot on so that it will not interferewith other services in the respective band plan.

w6oso: As reported on last nights Ham Nation the use of Hams during the events in Houston and surrounding areas were considered light. However a new application called Zello Walkie-Talkie application had surfaced with a great amount of use. It works with Android,

w6oso: The Zello Application can be found at; zello.com/app. The app has an interactive map that can be use for dispatching resources to needed areas. The map also shows areas that have already been serviced.

w6oso: Along with WB5EKU's suggestion It would be informative to discuss how much band spread is needed if more that one hotspots are in use at a single location. So to prevent cross talk and interference between hotspots.

kc9sio: I had mentioned earlier about the Southeast Weather Net. What I was saying was that we found out that they are basically a fair weather net, and nothing more. They don't handle any kind of emergency traffic.
