Jenny Peterson is a breast cancer survivor. Her long road through cancer treatment was hard, emotional and often deeply depressing. The one thing that pulled her out of the darkness was her desire to be able to garden again.

Peterson credits her garden with clearing her mental fog and overcoming her depression, physical limitations and pain. The Cancer Survivor’s Garden Companion explores the therapeutic benefits of this vital “earth connection.” With gentle empathy, beautiful photographs and easy how-to steps, she shows others how to create their own backyard haven for healing – a personal restorative garden – with a bonus of well-grounded guidance about diet, exercise, mental focus and spiritual renewal.

About this episode's guest, Erin Schanen

I’ve been blogging since 2009, offering garden inspiration and information for everyday gardeners, as well as a bit of DIY (and hilarity often ensues). My goal is to help gardeners of all skill levels love their gardens more and to become better gardeners.

I started gardening as a toddler, or so the photos in my parents’ albums would have me believe, but didn’t really pick it up again until after college. When I had filled an apartment patio so full of plants that walking on it was no longer an option, we found a house with enough room for a garden. And it turned out there was room for several gardens! I’ve been battling weeds and deer there for 15 years, creating and recreating gardens around the 1.3-acre property and sharing the lessons and beauty I find there on The Impatient Gardener. Along the line I became a master gardener and I love to continue to learn more about gardening every day.

The Impatient Gardener has been featured on Houzz, in Birds and Blooms magazine and on the Young House Love blog, as well as being named one of the top gardening blogs by Lawn Starter and one of Toolversed’s top 10 bloggers.

In addition to The Impatient Gardener, I also some freelance pieces, which have appeared in Luxury Magazine, the Ozaukee Press and other publications. I’m also a member of Proven Winners’ Garden Gurus blog team.

I am also available to speak to groups on a variety of fun and interesting gardening topics (no boring topics may apply).

In this episode of the Vegetable Gardening show, Mike chats with The Impatient Gardener's Erin Schanen about how gardening is not as hard as or complicated as you or others might lead you to believe.
Erin is going to tell us about her journey from growing in containers in an apartment to today where she gardens on nearly an acre of land growing everything from edibles to flowers and anything in between.
She'll break down for us why so many stop gardening before they even get started gardening and how to overcome that. She'll also tell us about how she started blogging her gardening adventures on her website The Impatient Gardener and how that has helped so many people break through and start gardening.
This and so much more on this episode of The Vegetable Gardening Show!
About this episode's guest Cindy Meredith

I live and grow in the humid south where winters are mild and summers are very hot and humid with the occasional hurricane or drenching rain. As with many parts of the country, the weather seems to have become more extreme, and as gardeners, we have to learn to do our best to cope with the weather. We sure can’t change it!!

I am located in rural Lavaca County, TX, among rolling hills of pastureland and live oaks. We’re under 2 hours from Houston, San Antonio, Austin and the central Gulf Coast.

I love to have visitors and I don’t want you to make a drive and not find me here. SO, it’s always best to call, text or email me to make sure I’ll be here when you’d like to come.

This is the country. There is very little paved area here at The Herb Cottage. I highly recommend shoes rather than sandals for your trip here. Restroom is available, and, if I know you’re coming, we can share some herb tea.

I use organic practices for growing all my healthy and nutritional plants. No chemical fertilizer, herbicides or pesticides are ever used. I use no GMO seeds and only buy seeds from reputable sources.

I love to talk herbs and gardening so stop on in, browse the plant selection and enjoy some time in the country.

About this episode's guest, Cheryl Meyer

There were so many things wrong with me, from years of my own neglect that I have found solutions for. I can be of great assistance leading you towards a healthier life. I have personal experience to share, and am quite passionate to share it with you. I also have the training from IIN (the Institute of Integrative Nutrition) to back my personal knowledge up with a broad educational perspective.

I want to inspire you to be your own health advocate and give you the tools to be able to do that. We will design a program together that will resonate with you. As your health muse, I will provide “excuse-proof’” accountability and on-going support so that you will be inspired to acquire and sustain the benefits of positive habits and shifts on a long-term basis.

I want to teach you how to clean up your food, your environment, and your life for a healthier you and for healthier family. The statistics are astonishing; the increase in diabetes, autism, cancer, and disease in children as well as adults in our county, is overwhelming. Cleaning up your life will give you and your family a better chance for long and a healthy life. Understanding what is happening to our food system, and learning to work around it, is critical for a healthier family.

About this episode's guest, Phil Deluca

Philip DeLuca, LCSW is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. But he prefers to be called the Un-Talk TM Therapist. (You have heard of Dr. Phil, well he is Dr. Un!). He is also a psychotherapy disruptor, relationship healer, author, speaker and guinea pig. He is a psychotherapy disruptor because he developed an alternative to conventional relationship counselling that is the opposite of what is conventionally accepted. He is a relationship healer because he heals relationships that “Express Yourself” communication approaches damage. He is a guinea pig because He has used his own struggles to help develop this approach.

During a twelve month international speaking tour to promote his first book “The Solo Partner“, he saw firsthand the failure of conventional conflict resolution and became more solidly convinced that a new approach was badly needed.

He turned to the latest body and brain science to upgrade the outdated “Express Yourself” model that was developed in the 60’s, became his own guinea pig, and eventually, successful case study.

What he developed was an alternative holistic model that frequently works where conventional couples therapy fail, brings quick results, is easy to understand and implement. He calls it, “Communication for the 21st century.”

His Un-Talk Therapy is the most efficient, least expensive method of ending relationship conflict and making communication fun again –- just ask any of his clients who’ve “tried everything.”

About this episode's guest, Melissa Caughey

I come from a career in medicine, a nurse practitioner in fact.

I never in a million years thought that keeping a flock of chickens would be in my future. Well, almost 7 years ago, a peeping package of six little fuzz balls arrived at our door step and I have not once looked back. I have always thought of my home as a nest for my family, a place filled with love and nurturing where new life, ideas, creativity, and relationships emerge. Over the years, this nest has become quite a place.

The chickens were the gateway to expanding our vegetable gardening efforts. They unlocked a passion for the locavore movement. They made me want to cook and serve their eggs and grow our own organic produce. They connected us with the earth and our natural surroundings. I started beekeeping and became a Master Gardener.

I have lots going on here at Tilly’s Nest and you certainly might find me in some other places on the internet such as HGTV, DIY Network, Community Chickens, Grit Magazine and Country Living Magazine. I also served as the technical editor for Gardening with Free Range Chickens for Dummies. Over the years, I’ve won some wonderful awards, have met amazing people, and been on an incredible journey of growth. I’ve even written a best selling award winning book, A Kid’s Guide to Keeping Chickens. My next book, How to Speak Chicken, will be available Fall 2017.

I’ve lived in many places, but Cape Cod, Massachusetts is where I call home. I live near the sea in a quaint historical New England village with my two children, husband and a Miniature Schnauzer named Sara. Winters are cold and summers are hot and if you are not careful enough to lock your car in the summer you might just end up with a seat full of fresh veggies from the generosity of a stranger.
