Creative Palestinian Non-Violent Resistance of the Scientific Kind

Palestinians have developed a number of creative, non-violent ways to challenge the brutal Israeli military occupation of Palestine. One of the more widely known forms of non-violent resistance is the BDS (Boycotts, Divestment & Sanctions) movement that was started in 2005 by about 150 Palestinian civil groups and joined by activists all around the world. When we spent a month in Palestine, based in Bethlehem, this past summer with the Holy Land Trust, one very innovative form of non-violent resistance came to our attention. We met Dr. Mazin & Jessie Qumsiyeh, who founded the Palestine Institute of Biodiversity and Sustainability and the Palestine Museum of Natural History that is associated with Bethlehem University. This 14 minute video is a talk by Dr. Qumsiyeh, given at the meeting of the Arab States Research and Education Network (ASREN) on Dec. 4, 2017. The meeting was held at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo. Professor Qumsiyeh’s paper dealt with challenges and opportunities for sustainable development in the 21st century with globalized systems. He highlighted the example of the Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability at Bethlehem University in areas of research, education, and environmental conservation. As the only Palestinian speaker at this conference, Prof. Qumsiyeh took the opportunity to also highlight the issues of Israeli colonial policies that effect sustainability in Palestine.

The vigilers were armed only with signs like "Choose Life, Not War," "Blessed Are The Peacemakers," "Where Are The Peacemakers?" and "No More Wars For Israel," and two fliers: "Choose Life Not War" and "Does The Bible Require Followers of Jesus to Support the Jewish State of Israel?" After over 200 vigils around the country, in terms of people engaged and fliers distributed, this vigil turned out to be one of our most effective ones, since we started them in Nov. 2002 at the First Southern Baptist Church of Scottsdale [AZ]. In 2012, shortly after posting our video "John Hagee with Benny Hinn: Praying For War In The Name of Jesus" (you can still watch the video on our site), John Hagee Ministries (JHM) forced YouTube (part of Google) to remove it, claiming they had the copyright on the prayer, offered by Hagee at the end of the program, This Is Your Day, hosted by Benny Hinn. that was used in our video. How does a prayer offered to God in public, and aired on commercial TV, have a claim to a copyright? The copyright on the whole program actually belongs to Benny Hinn Ministries from the 2003 show where the Un-Christlike prayer was uttered. We're grateful that we caused some feather ruffling in the radical Christian Zionist camp after getting over 25,000 views on YouTube in less than a month. In this podcast we also talk about another potentially dangerous phenomena, coming in on the radar screen, known as Messianic Christianity, where God is being promoted as a racist. The documentary, 5 Broken Cameras (nominated for an Academy Award For Best Documentary) documents the killing of Bassem Abu Rahma, one of the demonstrators in 2009. The picture, at left, is from a April 18, 2015 demonstration where two persons were injured, and scores suffered the effects of tear gas inhalation after Israeli soldiers attacked the weekly nonviolent protest against the Wall and Settlements, in Bil’in village near Ramallah. The protest also marked the Palestinian Prisoners Day, and commemorated the death of Bassem Abu Rahma.
