To Be a Storyteller (ft. Pawi Bitanga)

In this episode of Colon Slash, I interview Pawi Bitanga. Pawi is a storyteller through and through. His love of storytelling permeates every fiber of his being: from a career in filmmaking, to a side project as a children's book writer. It shines through his style of dance, and even the way he interacts with other people.

In the interview, we talk about his origins in storytelling, some lessons he's learned, and of course some interesting tangents, including a surprising amount of tangents about childhood.

Also, Pawi has his own podcast called The Small Break! In it, he has conversations with filmmakers who have just produced their first feature films. They cover everything from writing through distribution, whether in movie theaters or on Netflix and Amazon. The Small Break sheds light on the step-by-step processes that go into launching an independent film. It’s pretty geared towards a particular audience, but even as someone from outside the filmmaking world, it was pretty interesting. It can be found anywhere that iTunes podcasts can be found.

What Is Blockchain and Why Should I Care?

Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are on everyone’s mind right now, and the hype is real, but to me, the exciting part of bitcoin is not the currency itself, but the technology that drives it: blockchain.

What makes Bitcoin so special? Why was it the first to do what it does, why didn’t this exist before? It’s because Bitcoin introduced a technology called blockchain to the world. Although blockchain doesn’t have nearly the hype of cryptocurrencies in general, it has the potential to seriously change the world and how we do business.

The philosophy behind blockchain is “decentralization”, and blockchain has the potential to be the great equalizer between “us”, the people, and large corporations. I believe it could lead us to a world where large corporations have much less power than they do now, and in an era where this seems to be one of our biggest problems, it could be a solution that we desperately need.

Being Korean American (I guess Asian American) is weird. Race in America is often thought of as black and white, but where does Asian fit into that? As Asian Americans, we sit in this in between space where we’re not white, we’re not black. We’re not quite Asian, but we’re not quite American either.

The Asian American experience for me, and for many others I’d imagine, was a search for identity. In this episode, I talk to my friend, fellow Korean and fellow bboy about our Korean American experience. What it’s like to be Korean, what the Korean-American community is like, the good and the bad of it all, and some digressions and tangents.

The Future Is Here and It’s Awesome

In the Thanksgiving spirit, this episode is about appreciating the fact that we live in the goddamned future. There’s so much cool stuff going on nowadays, and I feel like we don’t appreciate it enough, so here’s an episode about me talking about some things that I think are pretty sick about the time we live in.

Destiny

Do you believe in destiny? A fundamental question of philosophy is the question of if we have free will, and it’s one of those questions that is, at least for now, unanswerable. Is there such a thing as destiny? Is there a plan for us, divine or not, or do we carve our own paths?

In the first episode of :/, I talk about my thoughts on destiny, and give a pseudo-scientific theory on whether or not it’s true.
