Whittling the Country Bear & his Woodland Animal Friends Book by Mike Shipley - available from Hobbies, the UK's favourite online hobby store!
Whittle 12 whimsical woodland creatures with step-by-step instructions and easy-to-use patterns in Woodcarving the Country Bear and His Friends. Not quite caricature, but not realistic either, these humorous bears, moose, rabbits and beavers are easy and fun to make. Each enjoyable project features full color photos from 4 angles, in-progress shots, detailed patterns, and paint color recommendations.
Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive.
Whittling is the cheapest and simplest hobby you can imagine: with just a sharp knife, a little practice, and the tiniest block of wood, you can make a characterful carving in just an hour or two. FYI 2016 BushMoot places are available to all members, friends and family at an Early Bird Discount, so hurry and get your tickets. I don't know how many of you have seen this book yet but there's some fun and simple projects in there.
I like that he starts with the basics and keeps the tools simple, just like his earlier book. If so I bet it's a good book, I have the one above and I'm impressed with the step by step instructions.

The cool thing is that his style of carving is perfect for the outdoors, at least where I spend most of my time. This is one of those books I've had for ages and done nothing with but having read this thread a while ago I figured I'd give something a bash. I did the Horse first as it looked the easiest (I have made spoons, knives, pokers and spreaders already ). Hope you like it I didn't sand it at all as I prefer them to look more rustic and the only tool I used for everything was my trusty Allan Blade PackPal.
Put together by one of our Forest School Leaders is the Whittling Kit, knife and book set for Children. The kit comes in several options, such as 'tipped' or round 'tip' knives, as well as a few colour options (round tip only). Its soft, fine, even texture makes it easy to work with, while its pale inconspicuous colour doesn't distract from the carved patterns of the finished product.
We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork. A characteristic feature of the Victorinox Swiss Army Knife is its multi-functionality, which makes it indispensible for many of life's situations.
He is the author of the website Miniature Menagerie, which features animated films of his whittling and his collection of wooden animals.

The second edition of his Whittling Twigs and Branches pretty much covers his previous books.
