By Eric 10 CommentsLast winter one of my friends showed me an Adirondack Guide Boat he was building in his basement. According to Wikipedia, the Adirondack guide boat is just that , it’s a boat that was used in the Adirondacks by professional guides who had paying passengers, usually from New York City, who wanted to go hunting or fishing and they traveled up to the Adirondack region of upstate New York to do so.
My friend built a classic Adirondack guide boat, these days according to Wikipedia, today they are made of Kevlar and fiberglass, but he was a purist and used all wood.
So I wanted share with you all some pictures of the finished Adirondack Guide Boat.  I have become really interested in boat building. I am sorry for being so critical, however it is my mission to educate the public about Adirondack Guideboats.
Hi Charles, I think most readers agree that the classic Adirondack boat is made of wood, and can appreciate the classic beauty of them. What Chris and Charles are saying is that your friend did not build a guideboat in the traditional sense.

In brief, there are 16 frames including the transom, full length stringers, dual stepped keel set up, engine hatch assay and seat assay. This iconic racing boat was originally designed by George Crouch in 1924 and went on to win the 1924 and 1925 APBA Gold Cup. It has been said that the 16 foot Gar Wood speedster is, pound for pound, the most valuable classic production speed boat in the world.
There are some 15 frames, 2 keels, twin hatch assembly, vertical cleats, gas tank fixing, drivers bench seat, breast hook, front and rear stems with knees etc. Precut wooden boat construction kits for conventional framed plywood, stitch & glue plywood and cedar strip models. Plans with full-size patterns for framed plywood, lapstrake, stitch & glue plywood, cedar strip, canvas covered and cold molded models.
There are occasions that a company will advertise easy, but they were created by somebody who has an entirely different idea than you do.
This will eliminate you needing to purchase lots of unnecessary things that won’t be utilized. It takes you to the experts who can show you in step by step instruction on how to build your first boat, no matter which wooden boats you choose from. He used the cedar strip method developed in the 1950s covered with a layer of fiberglass (The fiberglass is clear when impregnated with epoxy). If the Adirondack old time boat builders had modern adhesives and epoxy they would have used them. It would be a good idea to do a little investigation on the company, too to determine what sort of technical support they provide, if any, and look at testimonials from past customers. It will also avoid being in the middle of a step and realizing that you don’t have what you need to finish your task. I found this to be a very advanced design in that the stringers start at the transom and end at Frame 2.

If they do not have a good follow-up background after the sale you may end up shuck without assistance. One more very important factor is to decide before you start where you will be constructing your boat. First, he built a boat, something few people undertake, and far fewer finish, as you alluded to in your commentary. Perhaps i’m a traditionalist but in the opinion of anyone studying Adirondack history, these boats are made of WOOD. Other than its impressive deck lines, Zephyr lends itself to a variety of engine sizes through its generous beam.
If you have never worked with it before you probably want to try something basic to begin with, and maybe later work your way up. Check the boat plans to see what the size will be at completion and then decide where you will have sufficient space.
Secondly, the builder did a comendable job, although using what I would classify as a poor design.
This tested plan has the corrected offsets incorporated into the lines so is suitable for full size construction without the need for correcting the lines and attempting to fair frames.
I would buy you the drawings but I need them in electronic form so that I gave them to the factory for cutting on the machine. Original offsets are notorious for errors as they were often measured up as a matter of record rather than used to build. I have built a wherry, 2 Rangeley guideboats and am currently working on a TRADITIONAL Adirondack guideboat.
