A strip fastened to one part to hold it in place or to facilitate the fastening of another part. Sorting through the immense volume of information out there can be daunting, to say the least.
Another big decision you need to make as a new woodworker involves setting up shop and buying tools. I see in a photograph of the bench that the hardboard cover on the planing beam does appear to be as wide as the planing beam itself. If I was to point out one area that has changed the most from 2009 to the present, it may be the milling area. Even with introducing all these machines into a previously set-up shop, we were able to make the existing dust collection work, with a few minor tweaks, and the flow of product is as good as can be done, short of gutting the shop and doing a complete re-design. The new an improved back bay has undergone many changes in just the last 3 months alone, but the real transformation began about a year ago. Lucky for us, we had this back bay, close to 2,000 square feet, sitting unused, except as storage space for my fathers 26′ 5th wheel and a catch-all for random junk.

This bench features a sturdy top and a trestle base is rigid enough to resist any racking forces.

Rockler Woodworking's latest trim router table has a stable MDF surface and an acrylic base that fits most routers with space for freehand work. Ready to be on-the-go just as much as our editors, the Trim Router Table from Rockler Woodworking and Hardware combines mobility with stability for a portable 11-1?2" x 15" surface of vinyl covered MDF that can easily clamp to horizontal surfaces. Not only will you see all the tools I used at the time, but I’ll also give you an idea of what tools I think are necessities for small and large shops (toward the end of the video).
Choosing the right bench design seems to be more difficult than picking the right tablesaw or handplane though. You could generate a report or run a cutlist and get the dimensions in tabular form but there's no automatic way to have the dimensions show in the drawing. Alexander, the shop was geared around the production of custom interior shutters, but as the young company grew, both in sales volume and personnelle, so did our need for new machinery and space. Everything to the left of the picture, the specialized shutter production equipment and inventory racks, are still the same, but gone is the half wall that previously held the Safety Speed Cut panel saw. Back in 2009 it was pretty spacious and sparse, holding the table saw, jointer, planer, and stroke sander. For cabinetry production, the sheet goods enter through the bay door behind this picture, they are unloaded onto one of the two A-frames, which are just outside of the picture to the right, cut on the sliding table saw, edgebanded not 10′ away, and directly outside this picture, is our dado table saw and line boring machine.
A whole slew of general-use small machines, employed by both companies, are located in this area. We reclaimed the space by sending the 5th wheel to a covered storage unit, and clearing out all the junk, which is still a work-in-progress to this day.

Perhaps he had them on hand or maybe they were cheaper than iron caps especially if the pipe isn't threaded at that end as he might have had to pay to have the ends threaded. In its place is a Grizzly sliding table saw, which is not only used to cut sheet goods, but also to size shutters to their final height. Alexander had grown so much in the past year, we really needed a dedicated area to assemble and stage cabinetry. Behind this picture we have a huge garage door and room for the company trailer, an 8′ JLT clamp rack, a hinge boring machine on a mobile cart, our veneering bags and veneer pump, extra rolls of veneer, and installation tools. The main change to the paint room has been the introduction an old entertainment center that we removed from a clients home. Intermediate woodworkers will get practice installing hidden dowel hinges and joining boards with biscuits. If you reside in an EU member state besides UK, import VAT on this purchase is not recoverable. Back in 2009 I would not have classified our shop as overly spacious, or suffering from a boundless amount of space, but, with a bit of space planning and re-shuffling of machinery, we have been able to fully integrate J. The storage and staging racks have been shifted to accept the placement of the Delta shaper, and now do double duty by holding all our sheet goods, as well as shutter louvers and assembled shutters. Along the right side, there are two horizontal boring machines, a router table, and a shaper used for machining shutter components, and tucked along the front left corner is the aforementioned Delta shaper, used for machining raised panels, and behind that, is a triple cluster of shapers, one used by J. Alexander, and yet it simultaneously serves the needs of Shutter Crafts even better than before. Along the back walls we have squeezed in a chop saw, band saw, drill press, spindle sander, horizontal sander, dust collector, and a pocket boring machine.
Prior to using this area, we were using the torsion box table, seen in the previous picture, as the assembly table. That now sits along the back wall and holds our airless sprayer, stain samples and stain decks, and painting supplies. But none of the changes compare to the change that is on its way sometime in the near future, the introduction of a CNC machine.

By the time I've completed a bench model, I have a pretty good idea of how things go together. Of the machines I have purchased recently, all of the large ones have taken up residence in this area. The table in the middle right is the torsion box table I built 5 years ago when I first started J.
I also find as I'm drawing I end up working out an efficient method of machining the lumber so I can avoid having to duplicate setups where possible.Last weekend I decided to take another look at John White's New-Fangled Workbench (FWW #139) or the "Six Clamp Bench", as it has recently been dubbed.
The Timesaver widebelt, planer, and jointer sit where a small assembly table and the jointer use to be, the new edgebander pushed the old stroke sander out, and as you saw in the previous picture, the half wall was removed, the planer was re-positioned, and the sliding table saw was introduced. Alexander, and is the only perfectly flat assembly surface in the shop, so it sees quite a bit of use. We also needed to acquire more space to stage the cabinetry before it was loaded for install. An air-assisted airless, which we now use to spray all of our sealer and lacquer, and sometimes tinted lacquers and varnishes, was also added to our collection of pressure pots. John designed it to be quite versatile as well as simple and inexpensive to build.Drawing the bench itself is pretty straightforward. Along the left side, the CTD saw, facing away from the work area, is used to rough cut some shutter components and lumber prior to milling. Between that saw and the assembly tables we have a trio of work horses in our shop, the Gannomat Format 42 line boring machine, a Rockwell cabinet table saw, and an old Davis and Wells dedicated dado table saw. There are only 22 different components in the bench itself. After I completed the bench and the pipes I needed some clamps. It's important to consider just how much value high levels of detail actually add to the overall model. For this clamp, I wanted something a bit more detailed than simple blocks but I didn't want a component that was so large that it would bog down the bench model when I added it. I could have sketched it in a sort of free hand matter but I find it easier to take measurements and draw to scale.
Since this clamp has to interact with the bench model, it is easier to work with a properly scaled component. If you add all the filleted areas, the potential number of entities--edges and faces--could skyrocket.
As I worked I made decisions about the number of line segments used for the various circles and arcs in the model. The paddle end of the crank is an area that shows where I reduced the segment count perhaps a bit too much. This didn't concern me much and from a distance, it isn't very noticeable.I broke each of the parts down into sections to make it easier to draw. As I've shown in several other blog entries, I split the part in half and made it into a component. The component was copied and mirrored to make the opposing half and these halves were joined. The two components are made into a nested component so they can be handled as a unit for moving.Rather than drawing in the fillets, I used Soften (Ctrl+Eraser) or Hide (Shift+Eraser) to insinuate that those edges are not sharp.
Click on the image for a larger version.Originally I used a texture in the Metal library called Metal_Aluminum_Corrugated to create a fairly convincing thread appearance.
A texture is a good alternative to modeling small detail because it is faster to do and it usually has less of an effect on file size. Note that the size of the image file does impact the size of the SketchUp file.I showed this drawing to some friends. This single turn was made into a component which can be copied as many times as needed to get the desired length of the threads.
