Our first Murphy bed customer wanted to be able to use their study as a guest bedroom, but with a "real" guest bed rather than just a sofa bed or Futon. Normally we recommend bookcases beside the Murphy bed, with a pull-out shelf that can be used as a nightstand. A Murphy Bed, sometimes called a wall bed, is a bed that folds into a cabinet, closet, or wall when it is not in use.
This bed was made with walnut furniture grade plywood front and solid walnut trim mouldings. Occasionally we get an inquiry about someone who wants a Murphy bed for a kid's room, so there will be more room to play. The front of some cabinets rest directly on the floor when opened, and extend out an inch or two from the bed. The Murphy bed cabinet extends about 16 inches from the wall (other types extend as much as 30 inches). We don't like the Murphy beds that consist of a light-weight bed-spring and folding mattress, similar to a sofa bed or rolling cot. Murphy beds need to be "built in" so are probably not suitable for use in rental properties. The standard headboard is a flat panel - it doesn't show until you get in bed, then "who cares" (?). A Murphy bed is large, since it includes the cabinet, foundation, and bed, and weighs several hundred pounds. Room must be left on both sides of the bed to get into the bed, so it is logical that bookcases or other cabinets, at least as wide as an aisle (18 inches or more), are considered. If you have been thinking about a Murphy bed for a longer time, you will notice that the price is higher than earlier. If you have been planning to get a Murphy bed from me, I hope you understand the need for these changes. When the Murphy desk is closed, the legs fold into the front of the desk, and lock the desk into position.

The computer bed is a normal bed which makes an intelligent use of the space below the bed. In reality the gas piston dampens the natural action of weight transfer from bed to desk to bed. The Hoosier Wall Bed Company provides home office furniture solutions and Multi-Purpose Rooms for residential, firehouse, and commercial venues!
All of the Hoosier Wall Bed pieces are individually custom made, and therefore it is not possible to list prices. I have a really old set of existing cabinetry and woodwork.  Can you match the finish so it blends smoothly? In some cases, many full-size adults may not have a choice in furnishing their small apartment or bedroom with a bunk bed. Although the design is one factor that adults usually can choose, the size is another priority that cannot be ignored. One side of the room has a queen size Murphy Bed - when it is open, it largely fills the room, like a conventional bedroom. If your kid makes his bed every day, and never "plops down on the bed" during the day, this may be a good solution.
A pull-out shelf to use as a nightstand is on both sides of the bed, just above the doors (slightly lower on the right to clear the desk). The Murphy beds shown here must be attached to wall studs with screws (four 3 inch screws for a queen size bed). Delivery can be a challenge since it is several inches wider and longer than the mattress - it may require a truck rental or moving crew even for local delivery.
The original design had the bed on one side of the room - when it is closed, there is room for a full size "partner" desk - 3 by 5 feet - to fold down from the other side of the room. As the majority of bunk beds made in the past were aimed at children, most adults avoid bunk beds due to lack of style and the lack of full size bunk beds. As a number of bunk bed manufacturers develop more adult-friendly designs, it is much easier to find the perfect bunk bed.

For the full adult size, to have a good night’s sleep, at least full size mattress is not required. Four moderately strong amateur movers can carry it (two pros should be enough); on request I will temporarily add a couple boards across the back so it can be carried in a full-size pick-up truck. Bunk beds and adjustable beds now come with a fully developed system of features, ¬†adjustable beds come with a desk under them, and bunk beds come with lockers included. You can even go so far as to bunk beds with a complete system Regiment, along with lockers and a full table size. This bookcase should be at least 16-18 inches wide, corresponding to an aisle to provide access to the bed. Checking around, the commercially available Murphy beds are still more expensive, yet they are made from plastic (RTF) coated composition material, with lightweight mechanism. A conventional desktop computer will require special provisions for ventilation and wiring.
Full extension file drawers, with metal slides for the hanging folders, were included in the adjacent cabinet, but take substantially more work and material than simply including a shelf behind some doors. For those who want to preserve a certain theme for your furniture, it’s a great way to do it. There are not many queen or king beds, cots, if any, but to create their own can always be an option.
With literally hundreds of thousands of models to choose from, selecting a bunk bed may come easier than expected. Bunk beds, loft beds, and futon beds are a great way to save room and at the same be practical.
