The lowest speed range, going all the way down to 60 rpm is something you just won’t find in competitive lathes of this size. Honestly, looking at Jet’s other models, as well as competing models, I think this lathe fits in perfectly. Jet makes another similarly-sized lathe (model 1220), but without the three variable speed zones and lower speeds for $560 via Amazon.
Unless you know for sure that you won’t turn anything much larger than pens I would advise against anything but a full size lathe.
I got lucky today– the stars aligned and I had a chance to see this turner in person. If you were to ask most people in a plant or on a job site how could manual and electric hoists be improved you first two answers are probably going to be make them safer and able to last longer. On the Jet manual chain hoists L-100 series several new features really separate the Jet product from the rest of the professional grade competition of Harrington CB, CM (Columbus McKinnon) Cyclone 646 or Coffing LHH.

Until recently, interest in the SawStop Table Saw mostly centered around how cool the flesh-sensing magic of the safety device was. The problem is, manufacturer’s of woodworking machinery are not embracing the technology. So now thanks to this ruling, and as is often the case when lawyers get involved, it comes down to one thing — money.
If you were to sit down and try to redesign any tool so that it’s exactly what you’d want as a woodworker, what tool would it be?
Two of the first tools to come to my mind are the drill press and a contractor’s-style table saw. But, a few manufacturer’s are starting to come around to offer tools with wood shop features. The Powermatic 2800 VS Drill Press has so many features that are great for woodworkers it’s hard to list them all.
These are all welcome features that provide ease of use and accuracy that is rare on a standard drill press.Best of all is the extra-large table (it has dual extension wings to provide additional support for long work pieces).
One of the more impressive new tools I saw at IWF is the Jet Pro-Shop Contractor Style Table Saw. This table saw has a couple of features more commonly found on cabinet (or hybrid) style table saws.

When I first saw the steel gray and black paint scheme I was reminded of another manufacturer of woodworking machinery. When asked what it is that they hope will set them apart from the competition, the answer was — service. There are some true artists out there, and it seems like the Woodnet forums gets their fare share of them who build beautiful hand planes. Once Doug had the bending jig completed, he was ready to get started building the legs for the side table. Filed under Bent Lamination, Custom Furniture, Doug Hicks, End Table, Power Tools, Router Tables, ShopNotes Magazine, Table Saw, Wood, Woodworking. Over the next few weeks, Doug is going to send images of his work to me and explain to us all how he solved some of the problems in building the table as he goes along.
FREE SHIPPING, FREE TAILGATE & RESIDENTIAL DELIVERIES on all JET, POWERMATIC, WILTON and Performax products on this order. The new woodturning lathe is said to provide better control than competing models, thanks to 3 optimally designed speed ranges. Turning at 60 rpm, but still having plenty of torque behind the lathe, allows you to perform tasks such as threading and ornamental work that you can’t do nearly as effectively on a machine that only goes down to 250 rpm. Also available is a lathe stand (719202) for $348, a 22″ bed extension (719201) for $199, and extension stand (719203) for $107.
JET now offers a solution for heavy duty applications with their new line of Industrial Bench Grinders. There are really no excuses with such a wide range of options and very low entry level price points for collecting and handling dust. While Jet has been in the air tool market for some time it was somewhat of piece-meal offer that did not have a consistency across their tools or Good, Better, Best options necessary for the very popular tools like impacts and ratchets. More than just a few spec tweaks to keep up with the competition but a real rethinking of how the spindles are used, changed and stored make the Jet JOSS-S Spindle Sander ($1499) a good example of how Jet is setting themselves apart.
All the prices on Ohio Power Tool during the sale reflect the 15% off sale price for any item that qualifies. Most machinery will get 15% savings off minimum internet pricing and select accessories can get as much as 50% off. While Jet has not always been a product leader, over the past several years they have really begun to lead the way in innovating products for many categories and lifting systems is a shining example of that. Every woodworker who’s been at it sometime knows this is the best opportunity to purchase Jet and Powermatic woodworking equipment each year.
If this is what we should be looking forward to in the future we will be very happy but don’t take our word for it.
Our goal is to find new tools, accessories, and best possible solutions that will help improve the effectiveness of professionals in their daily jobs.
The authors are sharing personal opinions based on products and field testing, and are not necessarily the views of the Ohio Power Tool company. With genius design and ingenuity get all the features in a JET table saw that you would expect to find from a very expensive table saw minus the price tag.
The SawStop Table Saw works by sensing the electrical capacitance of human flesh to stop a spinning saw blade instantly when the blade senses a drop in voltage.
Consumer Products Safety Commission will turn the debate into one of economics rather than safety. According to Charles Murray, technical writer for Design News, woodworking tool manufacturers face the prospect of investing millions of dollars to re-tool existing production lines. I’m talking in particular about the Powermatic® 2800 VS Drill Press, and the Jet® Pro-Shop line of contractor style table saws.

From what I saw at IWF in Atlanta, the goal is to hit the ground running with the introduction of 35 new tools ranging from dust collection to bench grinders to table saws. All of the tools are backed by a full, 5-year warranty and they promise to deliver the best customer and technical service and support possible. Through the years, I’ve used plans from ShopNotes to build workbenches, tool stands, and jigs for joining, detailing, and finishing my furniture projects. With a large worksurface, loads of storage, dust collection, and a handy built-in router table, you’ll be able to handle any project. It also features an enhanced control panel, ratcheting belt tensioning system, and can switch rotation directions without stopping. Built to work in demanding, high volume environments, these grinders are durable enough to tackle the toughest grinding applications all day long while delivering high quality results you’d expect from a JET shop tool. These new Jet Cyclone Dust Collectors are a great example of 3 machines that can handle production level work for a very reasonable price tag. Without having tested any of these new air tools we can at least say we do like the simplicity and clarity of their new offering. The need for better safety in lifting systems have lead to several industry firsts from Jet.
Many people, including myself at one point thought the higher priced units (L-100 vs S-90) simply meant better chain (100 grade corrosion resistant zinc coated vs 80 grade black oxide coated) which is true but that’s just the beginning.
All the pricing will be an instant savings reflected right in the sale prices with no mail-in rebates or every coupon codes to mess with.
The large equipment manufacturing landscape has been shook up over the past couple years with JPW (Jet Powermatic Wilton) coming out on top in our minds. From the JET bench series all the way to the deluxe XACTA, there’s a table saw to fit every one of your sawing needs.
Features that a woodworker would find beneficial are an after-thought, if they’re thought of at all. I got a quick look at both of these new tools at IWF — 2006 in Atlanta last week, and are they impressive.
They made no secret that quite a few of the people working for Steel City formerly worked for the competition, including Delta, Powermatic and Jet.
Doug hasn’t purchased a tripod yet for his camera, so a few of the images are a bit out of focus and skewed to the left or right.
Paired with JET’s new Metal Dust Collection Stand, these grinders become the perfect solution for high volume shops. These additions make a nice next step up from the Jet Vortex Cone single stage collectors we’ve been using for years. Another huge differentiator for Jet is the 1 piece fused brake design which is guaranteed for life and as of the publishing of this story they have not had to replace a single one of these breaks due to failure.
Last summer we had the opportunity to sit down with the bright minds behind all the new woodworking machinery and we are extremely confident in the leadership as well as continued quality and innovations of these brands. And the contractor’s table saw, with its motor sticking out the back, is the price you paid for an affordable saw that supposedly is light enough to lug around to the job site.
A tried and true style of design these units add some premium features such as remote control, solid connectors and high quality Jet Tool construction. The more traditional 3 piece break system is what is used by Harrington, CM & Coffing on all their hoists in addition to Jet’s mid-range S90 chain hoists. Since the finished legs were to be 1” thick, that meant I needed 8 strips per leg, or 32 strips for all four legs.
Once again, you can turn to Workbench Magazine for reviews and much more on these new tools and lots of others in future issues.
