The stool can be made of short scrap pieces of mahogany (or your wood of choice) or from a single board 10 in.
It turned out pretty nice and I definitely improved by chiseling (and sharpening) skills as a result.
SBMathias writes: I made up this handsome stool, but using oak salvaged from shipping pallets. A two-piece top, connected by smooth-running slides, will open easily to accommodate a center leaf. Miller builds his own heavy duty extension slides by wrapping commerical drawer slides in a pair of hardwood channels.
Once opened, a typical extension table has room for one or two leaves that fit betwen the opened havles of the top. A space-saving table that can gracefully handle Corn Flakes for three or stir-fry for four will be overmatched when it comes to turkey and dressing for six - or eight. The time-honored solution is to make a small table bigger with an extension leaf or leaves. In the version featured in this download, the top opens in the middle to accept a leaf that makes the table longer.

They will be showing their work at the Nelson Trading Company building at 402 Baker Street in Nelson.
The show will include student projects made over the past year including unique and innovative examples of tables, cabinets and other woodworks.  Students will be on-hand throughout the weekend to answer questions about their work and talk about their experiences in the program. Selkirk College Fine Woodworking is a unique program where students learn both the creative and the technical skills required to pursue a career in design and fine furniture making. If you experience a technical issue or would like to see an edit on the current page, feel free to leave us a message.
Angled mortise-and-tenon construction makes this simple project a little trickier because your joints need to be dead-on.
I live in Poland a country with nice forests but as a hobby woodworker I can only buy pine or plywood (restricted logging). I ended up making strips, and having machine-cut tenons, with appropriate gaps in the strips becoming the mortises.

The download includes an annotated drawing of a sample table, plus a full article from furniture maker Jeff Miller describing how to choose, assemble and install the slides that make the table expand.

I've seen many different designs and ideas but I have to honestly say that this may just be the best one I've came across yet.
The cracks add texture and remind us that this is a great product of nature, not a piece of manmade material. It has just four parts (two of them identical), and only one type of joint to practice and perfect. This table was featured in an article Doug Mooberry wrote for  August 2009 Fine Woodworking magazine on how to work with large slabs of solid wood.
It's a manageable project for a novice, but the angled through-tenons will offer a challenge to any level of woodworker.
