Well up until now I have been using my computer running the router with the CRT monitor, keyboard, and mouse on the bottom shelf of the router.
The first thing I wanted to do was to replace my bulky 15″ CRT monitor with a flat screen LCD monitor. Then I was trying to figure out how to mount the monitor to the machine, a custom made LCD arm? I assembled the drawer using wood glue and mounted it under my router table using 24″ full extension drawer slides.
I think I’m going to make the drawer look more sleek and finish it with a nice coat of flat black paint. One thing I did learn doing this project is that when cutting finger joints on a CNC router, you should probably do pass with a smaller bit into the insider corners to square up the corners so the pieces can slide all the way together. We didn't have the right spot for a drawer base cabinet (although we really wanted to put one in!) :( so here's hoping you do - plans for an 18" drawer base cabinet follow.
PS - Check out this video for building the carcass and this video on building face frames, and this post on installing drawers. IMPORTANT: There are many different cabinet plans on this site - make sure you use the same family of plans if you are building cabinets. Cut toekicks out with a jigsaw - we made a toekick pattern block and used it to cut out all the sides.
It is always recommended to apply a test coat on a hidden area or scrap piece to ensure color evenness and adhesion.
I am carefully studying this plan (& the videos) as I am prepping to make this cabinet very soon.
Plastix Plus, a Cypress, Texas-based business founded by a volunteer fireman, is a leading builder of custom storage systems for Fire Departments, Police Agencies, Emergency Response teams, and Federal Agencies such as the U.S.
While other companies offer storage systems for SUVs and trucks, these are usually fabricated from wood and metal. Likewise the Hitec plastic is easier on fine gun finishes than metal boxes, and it won’t warp or absorb moisture like wood can. Plastix Plus hopes to expand to the general consumer market, providing custom in-vehicle storage solutions for trucks, RVs, and SUVs.
I apologize for the location of the focal point in this photo -- or the focus point, more truthfully. Hank Will raises hair sheep, heritage cattle and many varieties of open-pollinated corn with his wife, Karen, on their rural Osage County, Kansas farm. If you missed the last post on the sewing cabinet, here’s a refresher photo of the sewing cabinet glued up and waiting for some drawers.
They are really made to be able to dial-in inset drawers, but I thought I would see how they do.
Once installed, the drawers fit in the drawer bank, opened and closed, and… did I mention they fit in the drawer bank? I always slow down and take my time on the finishing touches of a project, just to make sure nothing goes awry at the end.

Check back soon for more updates on the Sewing Cabinet project as well as some more great information on the woodturning side of my business. Plastix Plus President Mike Snow says that the Vycom Hitec HDPE ? inch-thick plastic used by his company is a superior material.
Plastix Plus can match the exact dimensions of your vehicle, providing your choice of drawers, bins, and locking compartments, including gun storage lockers. Last weekend I built the drawer boxes and framed one of the doors before deciding it was just too cold and damp to linger out in the barn any longer. I will make faces to cover the visible ends of the drawers once I build and fit the cabinet doors. The drawer boxes actually slide easily and land square with the front, even with a 10-pound weight in them.
His home life is a perfect complement to his professional life as editor in chief at GRIT and Capper's Farmer magazines. We have been trying to find one and decided we would have to build or convert one to a mobile kitchen bar concept. That's why we want you to save money and trees by subscribing to GRIT through our automatic renewal savings plan. Luckily, this was a pretty simple job, and after checking to make sure the boxes were square, I snugged up the clamps and let them cook overnight.
Since the Seweing Cabinet has overlay drawer fronts, the majority of the adjustments aren’t extremely useful; however, there will be no question that they are aligned absolutely perfect!
Actually, they came out perfect, and I can’t wait to get the drawer fronts finished and mounted on the boxes. That’s about the worst time to run into problems, so taking some extra care never hurts. Using CNC design and thermal plastic welding technology, Plastix Plus can create an infinite variety of in-vehicle storage systems with trays, bins, boxes, shelves, and lockable secure storage.
By contrast, Snow says some fire departments that opted for wood storage systems have been forced to replace or rebuild their storage units after just a couple seasons. I thought about hooking up the portable propane forced air heater but opted to let the glue cure in the barn's small heated laundry room instead. I'm going to leave the slides as they are -- with a little sanding and waxing -- and see how it goes before considering installation of some nylon or teflon glides. However you can see that I joined the corners of the drawer boxes using interlocking dados and rebates. I am going to laminate up 3 or 4 heavy planks lengthwise and breadboard the ends for the top. By paying now with a credit card, you save an additional $5 and get 6 issues of GRIT for only $14.95 (USA only). Like magic, I came back in the morning, and they were all ready to get the drawer slide hardware mounted.

The Movento’s are super-adjustable (4 dimension), they have a nylon gear system for absolutely smooth gliding, soft-close, and they were pretty much the same price. I did a lot of double checking to make sure I had all the measurements correct, and my vigilance paid off.
I still have to mount the hinges for the flip-up top pieces, mount the wheels, and put the final finish on all the outside parts, plus I have to mount the drawer pulls (after we decide which ones to use). I bet you have one person who you think might enjoy the NV Woodwerks blog, so don’t be selfish and share with them. But it may be a smart purchase — when you consider the value of the guns and gear you haul around.
If you remember, in the first part of this project, I milled some dead pine, re-sawed and planed it and then started constructing the island's frame.
And on Sunday, I stayed indoors to write a chapter for the book Karen Keb and I are writing together.
The boxes were constructed out of pre-finished baltic birch ply, and they worked out nicely. Since I was doing other cutting and sanding, I decided to wait for a more opportune time to apply the finish. Plus, you have high moisture situations with fire fighting, so you need to worry about rust. Your investment in multiple match rifles (with scopes), along with fancy rests, electronics, and accessories, could easily top $15,000.
In the second installment, I completed most of the frame using hand tools and in the third installment, I framed the drawer slides and milled and planed additional lumber for the ends and back.
It took a little dinking to get everything to fit nice and snug but once it did, the boxes pretty much squared up on their own. It's called Plowing With Pigs and is about all kinds of 21st-Century homestead solutions, including making stuff with materials you can get for free. I wanted to give the pre-finished ply a trial run, and I’m fairly happy with the results. My goal is to have this piece finished by Christmas -- I might not make it, but I will try. The ends will be full of hand plane and chisel work, but once I peg them, there will be nary a chance for the planks to separate at their ends.
It definitely cuts down on finishing, but you have to be extremely careful when milling the parts. This is one job that the Festool track saw helps with since you put the track down on the piece rather than sliding the plywood across a cast iron table. You can also see that I have days of sanding ahead of me, but I find that to be fairly relaxing work.
