We have had a few requests over the last couple of months for square bench dogs and decided to make a few up. Originally, we chose the Wood Owl bit to supply with the kit as the highest quality product available for the job (pictured on our product page).
Recently, we had a delay in receiving the Speedbor bits and asked those customers who were waiting if it made a difference to them; receive a higher quality bit with the downside being a small lip, or wait a few days for an exact fitting bit. The lip in the dog hole does not bother me in the least (the dogs hang up a bit when you insert it), although Chris seamed to have a problem with it. First was to cut three pieces of wood into the right size. The bench dog holes total size and the length I choose to be app double the thickness of the bench top. On the left you see the only dog that came with the bench… I guess this dog cant bark a lot…So time to make some marking, now the shape comes and I simply follow the measures of the dog holes in the bench top. And put in screws for extra strength.I will put putty on top or change them with brass screws later I think these scream. Some on the heads of the bench dogs and some on small leather pads. After pre dry they are put together. In next part I will make a leg or a dead man and end up with a little funny history tour dating back to 1414.

Bench Dogs are an inexpensive solution for holding stock in place for belt sanding, hand planing and securing other objects. The high speed steel router bit cuts a precise hole to a depth of approximately 2″ (most plunge routers will allow you to bore to a depth of 2”). It gives the cleanest sidewall cut and minimal tear out on the backside of all the bits we tried. We did decide its up to you; when you order your EasyDog Kit from us, you now have the option of either the Wood Owl or the Irwin Speedbor; both are now in stock for immediate shipment!
This is now giving me the chance to spend some time on my old passion 'woodworking', and allows me to work with all the lovely tools from different cultures of this world. I will try that on my round dogs and see how it works, especially for rough planning perpendicular to the grain.

As usual your setting up a great workshop and this bench is a classic centerpiece, done your way. The faces have been sloped inward slightly to help hold down the material you are clamping.
They can easily be adjusted down in size if required by handplaning or sanding on a flat surface.
If your bench is thicker than 2″, we offer the kit with an auger bit to extend the plumb pilot hole through the rest of the thickness of the bench top. Bench Brakes can be placed on the top of the Bench Dog for a solid non-slip work surface-perfect for routing and sanding. If you would like more than what I have on hand, or different sizing, I will be happy to do another small batch run. This leaves a small lip (2 thousands of an inch) at the transition between the end of the cut of the router bit and the start of the auger bit cut.
