The Linux monitoring systems are often used to follow system resources, such as CPU load, the amount of free RAM, network traffic statics or memory consumption.
From those monitoring tools we will list the 7 most important in this article which will be described and identified by giving their features and mentioning their current version.
Monitor network services (SMTP, POP3, HTTP, NNTP, and PING), applications, operating systems, network protocols and system metrics with the same tool.
Detect infrastructure outages rapidly and send e-mail, SMS or call phone notifications to the right people when a problem is detected. Seriously, Nagios is one awesome IT infrastructure monitoring tool which I strongly recommend it for every administrator wishes to make his work easier and organized but it is good also to use it with other monitoring tools since Nagios doesn’t show any graphs such as the network interface.
Cacti is another monitoring system licensed also under GPL but unlike Nagios, Cacti is a network graphing solution designed to exploit the power of RRDTool in storing data and building graphs.
It enables users to view CPU load graphs, RAM usage and other information collected from different hosts.
Support all RRDTool’s graph items including AREA, STACK, LINE, COMMENT, VRULE, and HRULE. But unlike Nagios, Cacti doesn’t notify users while problems appear so it is recommended to use other flexible tools supporting alerts. Currently there are 4 different solutions available to suit different organizations with evolving business needs. CES Essentials is CES Standards including access to new software products and services such as Platinum level supports and various software extensions which allow users to automate the daily tasks of administration and monitoring. CES Advanced is CES Essentials adding also the Centreon’s complementary plugin pack and different templates comprising databases, applications and infrastructure services.
The last one is CES Complete which is the mix of all the centreon software products and modules, including BI, BAM and Map.
Zabbix is our fourth free monitoring system which is licensed as Nagios and Cacti under GPL and it is written in PHP. Personally, I like the way how Zabbix can check and make report about every authorized or not change happen at one of the user’s servers.  This free monitoring tool, can from remote hosts where Zabbix is used.
It is a little bit complicate for beginners and some additional time to be familiar with this monitoring system is recommended. It enables users to easily monitor their servers, network devices and applications, collecting appropriate statistics and performance data. It is designed to scale from small environments with a few devices to large ones with thousands of monitored devices.
OpenNMS is another free network monitoring system and it is the world’s first enterprise grade monitoring tool which can be used a big number of unlimited devices.

Icinga is another enterprise grade free monitoring system which enables users to follow network and its resources and also notifies them when any problem appear. It allows users to easily develop their own services checks due to its simple plugin design. No need to install any external SNMP package since MRTG uses a highly portable SNMP implementation written fully in Perl. It creates visual representations of the traffic seen during the last week, month and year. Still loadable modules which have allowed to expand at the new level of possibility of system were added to Zabbix 2.2 versions. For example, we will write the module which will allow Zabbix to collect information from the devices working under the widespread protocol of industrial automation in the world — Modbus and we will take by means of it readings of temperature sensors, and also we will receive electric power parameters from the counter Mercury 230. Couple of words about Modbus Modbus — very widespread protocol used in networks of industrial automation (plants, workshops, other industrial facilities, different engineering systems — everywhere it is possible to come across Modbus). Openness All specifications of the protocol are open and available to use for all comers it in the solutions, without any runtime royalty fees to someone. The first two tables can be used for work with simple discrete values: "the open it is closed", "accident - not accident", etc. For example, if we have controler with 16 dry contacts, and we want to know as there now, is closed or opened? If Modbus devices are on serial line (RS-485), each device in Modbus has the unique address (slave id, from 1 to 247), the interrogating unit always one and is called as the master. Setup of environment Let's prepare the small test stand which will help us to test our Modbus module in Zabbix. Everything is a little more difficult for DU-1M MAX-Logic (Merkuriy230): At first attentively according to the instruction on DU-1M we are connected to the counter Mercury 230, then instead of cozy graphic configurator as in Ovena we will use the console utility of modpoll, sending teams to configuration registers to configure interface to the counter (uf!).
As well as in case with start of scripts through UserParameter for a start it is necessary to think over as the data item key in Zabbix will look. But we completely copy them from example of dummy.c which is kindly described in documentation on Zabbix. And here work is minimized as not to bungle in implementation of work of the Modbus protocol and we will take not to invent the bicycle library on C which already all this not bad does: libmodbus.
Using the libmodbus interface, we will need only to make validation of the arriving data from Zabbix, then to start functions of poll from libmodbus, and then to transform the received values to data types of Zabbix'a and to return them. If everything was successfully restarted, we go to Zabbix and we will create template for our Modbus-devices.
Conclusion By means of loadable modules the Zabbix developers have given us the interface for creation of rather fast and well integrated with Zabbix expansions. If you have any questions regarding the material covered in the article above, please, contact the original author of the post. By default zabbix is able to check the total number of processes on a machine and triggers and error if these are above 300.
I do want to change this rule to trigger a warning if the number of process per CPU is greater than 300. Not the answer you're looking for?Browse other questions tagged zabbix or ask your own question. I would like to monitor the ping from my server and I want to activate a trigger if the ping gets unresponsive or ping time exceeds 20 milliseconds.

It enables organizations to identify and resolve IT infrastructure problems before affecting critical business processes. For more details, you can check the license as either as by using the LICENSE file of the Nagios distribution or by reading the online version of license. Like Nagios, Cacti supports SNMP that makes it possible to monitor: Linux’s, BSD’s and windows hosts.
Mostly called CES referencing to the Centreon Enterprise Server, is the choice of some world’s largest company.
We can say that Zabbix is the mix of Nagios and Cacti functions: it is characterized by its simple way of monitoring data with graphs and its alerts sending to user in case of any problem. It is simpler than Nagios, Cacti and Zabbix which can be more beneficial to use it with small projects. Of course, there are other tools we don’t mention, if you want to include them in our article please feel free to leave a comment here with a brief description of the suggested tools.
The data access in memory of the device is provided through special logical tables: Discrete Input, Coils, Input Registers, Holding Registers.
Then we can take away values of all 16 contacts at once through the table Input Registers, or read all contacts in turn through the table Input Discrete. So if you are going to work with the resources which are not suffering simultaneous access (the file or serial port in our case), it is necessary to implement control of this access by own efforts. Yes, opportunities are still limited to creation of new types of data items, and, for example, it will not turn out to add new trigger function (ZBXNEXT-2650), but we will live, we will see. I do have a server with 32 codes and obviously 300 processes would be nothing for this machine. Furthermore, those tools notify the network administrator (via email, SMS or other alarms) when something interrupts or goes down which makes their life easier. It lets company supervise all their infrastructure and applications comprising their information system. Mostly, it is used for monitoring network interfaces, CPU, memory and network interfaces statistics. Of course, first of all it is speed — modules, as well as Zabbix, are written on C and at the correct approach work as fast as possible, unlike external programs which are required to be started on each poll. And the problem when data are not located in 16 bits, easily is solved by use of two next registers. As bonus we will take readings from the widespread three-phase power meter Mercury 230R by means of the DU-1M MAX-Logic converter which is able to turn the built-in protocol of Mercury into Modbus.
I have made it through semaphores that has a little complicated task, but fortunately it is required to be done not always. Or have written template under cunning piece of iron and are ready to share it with the others? Need to write code can frighten many, but today I want to show you that everything is not so difficult. In Modbus it is possible to address to data items through through addressing from 0 to 65535 according to all tables.
